Oh well, just had a phone call and the gearbox has eaten itself 1st, 3rd and reverse have gone and clutch pack 1 has taken allot of the brunt. The fluid came out of the side of the oil filter housing as it has a hole in it now. I take back the bit about it going into limp mode to protect itself. Time to start looking for a new box.:(

That's rough I'm sorry to hear it.

Wow.... So the #1 clutch and gearset broke? Eco mode, quarter throttle, highway.... it mustve been in 6th already then for sure, so u dropped 3 gears to 3rd? Or just 1 into 5th, and it exploded? NOt sure if u have the mod that shows ur gear even in auto, but im curious as to how the STRONGER of the two gearsets/clutch fc'ed up.

Very sorry sir, praying you get a good cheap replacement.

Just a gentle pass as there was no other traffic around and just come around a corner so the speed was low and it was just like moderate acceleration. No bang, clunk, or any other noise and no loss of power until I eased off the throttle after seeing the oil and it started coasting in neutral. There must have been something wrong for a while and it just let go at that time. Looking over the internet I can't find any similar cases so hopefully this is just a one off failure.

Latest update is had a phone call of the mechanic and said he will get me a new complete Gearbox on way from VW, new with a 2 year warranty and hopefully have the car back in around 10 days.

This has to be the most bizarre trans failure I've ever heard of.

DSG failures are extremely rare to begin with, so to have one grenade at 1/4 throttle is very bizarre. There had to be some defect, or you forgot to mention you're making 550ft-lbs. :)

Hopefully I have taken the his so nobody else has to statistically speaking.;)

It was serviced at 40k and not been tuned, only thing it has fitted is the pedal box and 034 dogbone insert.

Just been chatting to a mate about it and he said something could have been rattling around in there for weeks and suddenly catches on something that starts the damage off. It was the first time it has been put in eco mode for months as well as just enjoying the sun with the windows down.

Over took a lorry earlier and looked in the mirror and there was a plume of what I thought was smoke. Wasn't smoke, it was transmission fluid as within seconds it came up "Gearbox Overheating" followed by "ACC Not Active" "Gearbox in Limp Mode" and then "Transmission, Workshop!". Pulled over and the back of the car was covered in oil. Popped the bonnet and the top of the gearbox was swimming in fluid and a pool underneath it. There was no bang, pop, crack or any noise to warn me of it and was in Eco mode so the overtake was not pushing the boundaries of power at all.

Hopefully it will be something simple failed, checked the DSG filter cover and it was tight. Got it recovered and they are hopefully looking at it tomorrow for me.

First nice sunny day of the year as well!

Yikes!
Sorry to hear that , and just out of the blue too.
Hope it is resolved quickly.

If you were non-tuned, and had all major services performed as needed, and it sounds like you did, I'd try to negotiate with the dealer on the parts and labor cost. If not, perhaps reach out to VW directly and see if they'll help. Worth a shot.

Not going through a dealer as a year out of warranty and they are way too expensive at around £100+ per hour labour, I can get it done for £40/hour at a VW specialist (Ex VW technician as well) and that includes fitting and coding. Box ordered and awaiting delivery presume from Germany.

Might still be worth contacting VW corporate. They may be interested in trying to figure out what happened and may give you some sort of consideration.

Yep; I understand you're out of warranty, hence why I suggested you negotiate. And regarding the new parts warranty - make sure it applies to parts not installed by a dealer; if not, then it makes less sense to get a brand new unit.

Obviously it may be different in the UK, but worth researching, as the new parts warranty may not be 2 years. as you claim above.

Lastly, if you're having it installed by an independent mechanic, why not get a used one, since they rarely fail - save yourself even more money. JMHO, YMMV, HTH; etc. etc. Best of luck.

VW UK won't be interested as it was not serviced by a VW dealer for the last 18 months of the warranty. It would be a hell of a fight if it was a few weeks out of warranty let alone a year.

The warranty here in UK for new parts is 2 years unlimited mileage from VW.

Just waiting for shiny new box to come now and get back on the road.:)
