I never thought about not removing the driveshaft/ downpipe, but I guess it is doable.

I am just glad I didn't do it on my own. I had professional help and they just removed the axle and did everything from below including the pipe.

Hey no one mentioned anything about triple squats and extensions. If I need to go to the gym, I want no part of this. :p

I lost 5 lbs installing this mother sucker.

My hamstrings hurt for 3 days after leaning over the car for hours! But, it was worth it

Sympathy goes to you AWD guys!

probably a noob question...

On a 1.8 TSI engine, just doing a IS12 to IS20 swap without ECU Tuning/Re-Mapping gives any performance gains ?

Or does this swap requires a tune ? If so which one. Can you shed some info on this ?
APR Stage X
Unitronic, etc...

Thanks.

I would not try it without tune or at least jb4. At low RPM the is12 car expects quicker boost response than the is20 can handle and at higher rpm the air supply is too much. I go with map6 and I had a lot of P0299 errors at the beginning till I lowered target to
1500 - 11
2000 - 11
2500 - 13
3000 - 16
3500 - 19 and so on.
It could not provide the boost at low rpm I wanted at the beginning.

I think uni and apr have a 1.8 is20 ready tune. But maybe you can get a custom tune from a specialist with dyno.

Thanks, that helps.

With no tune the performance gains with just an IS20 will technically be there, but very minimal. I would never recommend getting an IS20 without an accompanying tune of some kind.

Probably stupid question here, but this thread needs to get back on front page anyway. All the parts necessary for the IS20 swap will be here tomorrow, and I'm really anxious to do the swap and start having some fun. However, my JB4 data cable has been a bit picky lately and doesn't always connect (might end up ordering a new data cable), and slightly paranoid that I'll do the swap, then not be able to connect to the JB4 to setup map 6. Would the car be fine for a little while running just the IS20 on map 0 if I have issues connecting to change it?

Most likely the issue with the JB4 sometimes not connecting isn't the cable, but just the buggieness of trying to connect to external microcontrollers with windows. I've had the JB4 not want to connect before and it feels very similar to when I'm trying to connect an Arduino and it doesn't want to connect. All I usually need to do was double check the comm port of the JB4 and try again until it works.

OK, who has tips for getting the oil line back on the engine block. I have the line fitted in, but for the life of me can't get a bolt to thread in. Been at this for an hour at least.

Do you have a picture? If the bolt isn't threading it sounds like the line is rotated incorrectly.

Not sure I can get a picture of it. I've been sticking an inspection mirror in now to try to line it up, but even with that it's really tough to wee.

Finally got the bolt in, just took a ton of time to get it lined up right, and also dropped one of the 12 point bolts in the process... Looks low this is going into day 2 tomorrow
