Firmware update?

What does the "update" option buried in the menus mean? If I google Volkswagen firmware update, all I see is references to navigation updates. Looking on VW's website says you have to pay for an update and see your dealer. Except I don't think my 2017 Golf Wolfsburg has navigation. I use CarPlay anyway. Would be nice to have a way to apply VW updates.

Updated are flashed to the infotainment system by the dealer. You can simply call your dealer and ask to speak to a service advisor. Ask them to run your VIN and find out if there are updates available for your car.

I assume you can’t check your vin on the internet to see if there’s an update?

Never seen VW do it.
