How to kill CarNet (also, what's inside the box and buttons.)

Quick note for anyone removing center radio trim and to OP: to properly remove this trim you must remove the center vents at the same time. I work for VWoA and can confirm that this was made as one piece (hence the tabs breaking if you don't remove as one). At VW there is a special tool to go into the vent that helps pull it out. The tool is like a pick with a hook that goes into the bottom slat of the vent and catches the back and when pulled helps pull the vents from their seated position. Two metal tabs that are holding it back which I'm sure you can see in the OP's pictures. Just a FYI so you all don't break your stuff. [emoji106]

Comes in handy if you're not "at fault". BTW, it's just like a Go Pro, you have to actually turn it on to start recording. The default is the off position. It isn't the PDC (Performance Data Recorder), you have to worry about. It's OnStAR, which is installed in many vehicles. If Big Brother is really looking for you, tearing apart your car to remove Car Net or OnStar is not going to do much. :)

Big brother at its finest. Well actually the Corvettes have their onboard video system which is even worse because it can be played back visually and tell a lot more of a picture in court...

Thanks for the disassembly tips! I added a note to my first post so others can read through and learn how to properly take apart their interior.

Does anyone know if the SOS button works if you don't have CarNet activated? Can it dial 911 from my connected phone or something?

For those who are reluctant to carry out such major surgery, there is an expensive alternative. With help from VW of North America, the dealer can put the Car-Net system into "Flight Mode" which disables all cellular communication.

I came across this bit of information in a quote from Frank Weith (General Manager, Connected Services, VW Group of North America) on this page: http://www.bbc.com/autos/story/20160809-your-car-is-not-your-friend

I spent four months going in circles with Customer Service trying to get Car-Net disabled. It was a byzantine nightmare of stonewalling, deflection, dissembling, and outright lies. At every turn they denied that it was possible. But they eventually relented and agreed to connect my dealer with the people at VW who could tell them how to do it. They charged me $500 to do it (price set by VW - the dealer wanted to do it for free). I suspect that you could negotiate a lower price from your dealer. VW obviously wants very much to discourage this. I'll leave it to you to speculate about why.

If you try this, and Customer Service claims it can't be done, I can provide a phone number for the guy who finally agreed to arrange it. Write to me at VWowner611@outlook.com.

I appreciate that Car-Net provides services that some people find useful, but at the expense of a) loss of privacy; and b) exposure to hacking risk. To me that cost is too high. I can easily imagine a someone hacking into VW's systems to disable every VW in north America for fun ... or ransom. As the owner of the car it should be my prerogative to give up the Car-Net services in exchange for immunity from such hacking and privacy invasion. And it shouldn't cost $500.

When i was tooling around in OBDEleven for an unrelated update, i noticed coding for the car-net buttons with a phone number specified. I wonder if this stuff can just be disabled/updated using OBDEleven.. would save some major hassle it seems..

oh and mixed up with the toes pics as well.. guess wifey/gf was in driver seat while you were unscrewing things.

Hey guys so I have a 2016 Jetta GLI, I was following this forum for a bit and followed the steps shown earlier in this post but for some reason when I remove the speedometer & everything else I can't seem to pinpoint the carnet item that I want to remove? Am I missing something or do I need to open up the spedo to see??

I recall reading somewhere that the Car Net box for the Jetta is actually mounted under one of the front seats.

So, if I reverse pin 2 and pin 5, could I get my status light to be red instead of green? Or is the jump between 287 and 220 too much? I don't want to burn any LEDs out. I guess I could just remove pin 2 and leave it dark.

The green led is an eyesore. The rest of the interior is all white and red...

I managed to clear the remaining errors after the delete. I had two errors after removing from canbus, one for central electronics and one for information electronics.

Central electronics error has "OCU" in it, so I disabled all OCU related things in VCDS (this was remote lock/unlock and a few other).

Information electronics error has "ENI" in it, so I disabled all ENI related things in VCDS.

After doing that, I had no errors related to the removal of this module.

Has anyone just tried unregistering the communications module from the CAN bus via VCDS or OBDeleven? That way there's no need to remove it. If it is not "registered" on the Gateway, it won't even get power, and it can't do anything.
