Personally, I never used it for anything and grime and stuff just builds up around it (I have kids).
And I think the cover has a cleaner look.

Ordered mine from 2slowvw yesterday. Looking forward to it. FWIW the parking lot at my gym gives out tickets that are two wide for that slot. I know it’s silly, but my obsessive side will be happy to cover it up.

Got mine today. Gonna hit it with some high build primer, sand it and then try to color match the silver trim around the shifter. Looks great as is though!
