INA(now IAbed)made a cam follower conversion kit, not sure if still available: http://iabedindustries.com
Add port injection to resolve carbon buildup... Other than those 2 issues that can be corrected, the FSI was a bulletproof motor.

The permanent solution to this problem is the 2.0T FSI to 2.0 TSI fuel pump follower conversion kit from iABED Industries. This kit utilizes the roller bearing style cam follower found on VAG 2.0 TSI (EA888) engines and retrofits it to work with the OEM 2.0T FSI (EA113) intake cam lobe. To achieve this the camshaft adjuster housing is CNC machined at the fuel pump opening in order to fit the CNC'ed T6061 billet cam follower adapter.

Sounds like a lot of work, and certainly not worth it on a 120K car.

I'd rather have to deal with the occiasional cam follower than all of the bullshit gen 1 TSIs have.

I had a 2006 GLI (FSI) and a 2009 GTI (TSI gen 1), and cam follower aside i had FAR more issues with the 09.

TSI:
2 waterpumps
2 intake manifolds
1 throttle bodies
1 HPFP
1 ABS module
Chain rattle at 40k.

I also had about 4 different BT setups on the car, so i'm sure that was a factor, but still the FSI i had was otherwise bulletproof aside. If you can get over the belt vs. chain issue, and stomache the annual cam follower change FSI>TSI (gen 1)

\rant.
