All of your shifts are perfect? You've never missed one? I know I've missed my fair share of shifts and I'm very familiar with manual transmissions. Dude made a mistake, happens to the best of us.
Of course I've missed shifts. We all have.
Forget the damn money shift, the guy just doesn't have seat time / skill with a stick.
If he was a driver and made a mistake, I wouldn't say shit about it.
High 12s - mid 13s in an AWD car that traps 120+ is sad and indicative of a weak 60' and slow shifts.
The last time I went mid 13s in a fast AWD it was because I had torn 3 pucks off the 6 puck clutch and I couldn't get the clutch to disengage.
Cut a 1.7 60ft with literally half a clutch disc and had to wait about a full second between shifts. ...then I had to drive it 80 miles home with half the friction material hanging out of the bell housing.
Good times.
What's the point of shifting pass redline in a car with turbo (and full torque at 2k rpm)? Is it only to increase odds of pricey mistakes? Or to wear the engine more than necessary?
Horsepower is all that matters during full throttle acceleration.
Peak HP of most IS20 cars is about 5200- 5500. You want to shift past peak so you don't come into the next gear too low. You need to maximize average HP.
I can't speak to the manuals, but the DSG has long shift extensions. Shifting 3-4 at 6700 drops the revs to about 4800 at the start of 4th gear.
At 6700 I'm making 15whp less than peak. At 4800 it's also about 15whp less than peak...so my stock turbo car goes fastest shifted at 6500-6700.
This is track proven and supported by the Dyno.
APR cars which have more boost and more mid range tq probably go faster when shifted a bit lower.
This is DSG, I don't have any real seat time with the manual MK7s but I believe the ratios are closer, which will change the optimal shift points.
That said, the Golf R has a higher HP peak with the IS38, so it needs to be shifted at the limiter regardless of the trans.
