Doubtful that the base Mk8 GTI can challange the Type R's current record, but I wouldn't be suprised to see VW take another shot at it when the inevitable Clubsport edition rolls around.

Hard to say. I know they're going after it currently with the ID-R laps they're getting in. That vehicle was originally developed around the golf tcr platform, so I can only imagine any lessons learned are being utilized for next platform development. At this point, I can only imagine there plan is to stop chasing it with petrol, but go after it with something like a next-gen hybrid GTI/ GTE or similar.
