So I checked out pricing through TrueCar, which sent my info to a bunch of Bay Area dealers. Instantly, my email and phone was blowing up. Looking at dealer inventory, some of these dealers have 30-40 GTI's in stock! Most of them are black or grey, in DSG. There seem to be very few manual cars around here, especially in Pure White, which is the only color I wanted.
Some of the emails contained some great deals, like ~$23,000 for Sport models with DSG. I got this offer from multiple dealers. However, after emailing the dealers back trying to get more details, I learned that these deals were subject to "Standard" financing of 4.99%. And this includes $500 off for being a recent college grad (which I am not). If I wanted to get the 0% Sell Down promotion (which ended on the 10/31) the price would be much higher. At this rate, dealers were only offering $2000 off MSRP. So the deals definitely change once you try and get more details, and you may not qualify for all the deals they are initially quoting you.
I tried going down to SF VW, as their online sales guy Jeff was really nice and not a pushy sales guy. Unfortunately, they were unable to get the car I wanted in a trade and I really didn't want to settle for another car.
I ended up going to Sunnyvale VW and got the Sport w/6MT for $25,500 + TTL with 0% interest for 5 yrs, and I put $0 down. Maybe I could have gotten the car a little lower by haggling or waiting later in the year, but I was happy with 0% and not having to put any money down. Plus, from all my research there were only 3 Sport 6MT in white in California, and I was already at the dealer till almost 8pm, so I was ready to get out of there.
If you want black, grey, or the S package, there are some good deals to be had.
