This is a TSI :)

Direct Injected

Yup, newer cars (at least in the NA market) have abandoned port injection for direct injection, were the fuel is directly injected into the cylinder (instead of the intake manifold). In Europe they still use port injection to clean the valves, which becomes an issue when only using DI. The injectors for DI engines have to over come much more forces and so the injector is much more complicated and as a by-product, louder due to how they work. If you park in a place where the sound can be reflected back at you, it is much more noticeable.

As a note, Diesel's have been doing this for ages, as they rely on compression and heat to combust the mixture, instead of a spark plug. TDI simply means Turbo Direct Injection, but VW uses it to mean the diesel engines. TSI means Turbo Stratified Injection, which is slightly different due to the nature of gas versus diesel.
