Most of you are too young to remember when service station attendants not only pumped your gas but checked your oil and cleaned your windshield as well. And they did every mechanical repair dealers did. There were so many you had your choice of mechanics, since like always there's good mechanics and bad mechanics. So oil was checked after letting the car sit for a minute or two or three.

Get in the habit of checking the oil when you fill up for gas. Have been doing this since 1996 (at the time, my 1979 528i's M30 drank 1 quart per 500 miles due to very tired valve seals).

Another top tip: When you know it's perfect/spot-on (hot), park it over night and check the level the next morning. Take a mental note of where the oil sits on your dip stick -- that's your cold full mark.
