On a more serious note, don't they just screw off on a manual.
And on a less than serious note, my wife once came home from a night-shift in the Accident and Emergency (where she was a nurse) in a very amused state - they had spent part of the shift removing a Mini gear knob from the girlfriend of the Mini's owner ... ... ... guess that puts a different slant on removing a gear knob, the Fire Brigade had already severed the connection from the car with a grinder - no, this was not a vehicle accident!

I changed mine for the euro spec sports gear knob.
Prise off the plastic bottom of the leather gaitor.
Pull it up and you will see a metal 'clamp' type affair at the top of the shaft, just below the gear knob. You just need to prise it apart and the whole thing slips off.
Re-fit is fiddly to get the clamp tight enough or alternatively you could try a jubilee clip and trim the excess off.
Note the knob, leather gaitor and plastic bottom are all one item
