Seems like a fair and balanced review.

I recently looked at the AMG, and whilst the technology offering is enticing and I think a step forward, the interior quality is certainly not good enough.

To spec the AMG to a decent level is also ludicrously expensive.

Nice comparison, i know it’s all subjective but I prefer the looks both interior and exterior of the a35. In Australia the R will destroy it for value as right now we can get brand new R for $54k with 5 year warranty. The a35 listed at $67k plus everyone will want amg pack options and of course on roads which will put it close to $80k optioned. Generally here you can negotiate 10% off price. I know that’s the case with bmw, Audi and VW. Never bought merc so not sure.

I think the new bmw 135i will be the bigger rival here as pricing should be only few $k more than the R. Obviously have to test drive them all but I’d expect the bmw to almost be best to drive with the extra torque.

It’s just nice for us to have options. I’ll be updating wife’s s3 next year and a35, s3 and new 135i the list. R not on list as wife doesn’t want VW even though best value. Teat drove the new GT mustang and not practical and felt cheap inside, same with focus RS.
