Composition media firmware update

I have a golf 7, I want to enable the appconnect feature, I talked to a guy in my dealership and he said I have to buy a whole new unit that has this feature pre-installed, I don't trust what he is saying, theoretically speaking it is the same hardware, and to me it just looks like a software update, I have to usb port to connect the unit to phone, and the composition media has the touch screen, so from a hardware prespective a 2014 composition media isn't that different from a 2015 composition media.

How can I do a firmware update? Can someone please share the software version of a composition media that has the app connect?

Here is my info:

Hardware version: 041
Software version: 0421

2014 models can't be software updated as they are the previous generation MIB1 systems. Only MIB2 from second half 2015 can be updated.

It would be better and cheaper to buy a pioneer unit and have it fitted then do as the dealer said.

Honestly using CarPlay for about a month now on my 2016 it's not all its cut out to be and very buggy I've disconnected it a few times and just went with stock media button. Especially if you use the info monitor on your instrument panel it's useless because if you try to use anything like phone media or navigation, it does not display any info. It just says apple car play which sucks.

ok, so MIB II retrofit seems expensive, how about installing an android interface, by doing so I'll keep the original system, and at the same time I'll have the extra functionaries and there is no need for a phone app integration, the two devices will sync using the cloud if there is any communication needed
