why did my engine light come on after replacing battery ?

I just replaced my battery , the car start it perfectly , but my engine light is on after the replacement , why is that ? I did some research on google , some say disconnect the battery and put the two battery terminals in contact for 30 seconds to reset the computer , should i try that ? or I should buy one of those obdeleven scanner to reset the code ? or I should to bring it to the VW dealership ? or it will just go away later on ?

Do not put them in contact!!!!

with the car on but engine not turned over turn your steering wheel from lock to lock(all the way left then all the way right) this will reset lights due to battery being disconnected.
