Why can't I get rid of this car?

My gti is a 2016 pp autobahn with only 50k miles or so. I've owned it since 2017 and done quite a bit to it and with it, but occasionally I get the itch for a new car. I've driven an rs3 (not the latest one, but the one prior) and it felt too heavy. I drove an m2 and it was more fun and poised than the rs3, but the cost isn't justified imo. The m3 is way better than the m2 and I'd maybe sell the gti for it, but it's pretty fugly. Merc makes literally nothing interesting.

So far the only recent car that has interested me is the new Integra type s, but having owned a Honda previously I'm not sure if I want to go that route. In the same vein, I'll never own another wrx or sti. I also just don't want an awd car. I find the fun and drama to be in the 2wd cars, whether fwd or rwd, because they just don't understeer as much and make for more action and fun when tossing the car around on track.

It can't be just me, right? Are there others out there who just can't seem to get rid of their Gti?

Almost 8 years with my Mk7 & 135,000 miles.

There’s nothing I would consider an all around upgrade that I can justify (Mk7 punches way above its weight class).

Not a gti, but I’ve grown bored of my R in similar fashion. I love the performance but it’s just not a cool car (IMO). I only have it for fun as I have a few other vehicles to drive and a company car, so I’m looking at f80/f82 m cars. G87 m2 seems great but a little more expensive for very similar performance. Looks good in black, to me. I’m a little hung up on manual vs automatic but I hate rev hang on newer manual cars so that may come in to play.

I’ve found that the g80/82 look best in a darker color with the upgraded grill (cs?).

The answer, for me, is always a 911, but the Porsche market is still silly and I can’t afford to spend $100k on a car. Hoping for the market to come down sometime but a forced induction 911 is a retirement goal anyway, so I have some time and something to look forward to.

Interested to hear what you move on to, if anything.

I've driven the latest 911 gts and cayman gts on track. If going 911, I would 100% not go forced induction. Imo, the magic of those cars is in the response and the turbo just ruins that. You can turn on their anti-lag solution, but that cuts off engine braking almost entirely and it just feels...weird...

If I didn't need back seats I'd get a miata or a supra. I've been considering one of them as a second (fourth) car as well recently, but for the money of the supra you can get an alfa 4c or a lotus, and the miata rf is pushing 40k fast. I like the alfa, but it's flappy paddle only. The exige is just stupid hard to find without the clamshell damaged.

It's also hard for me to justify a dedicated 2 seater since I already have a dedicated racecar (370z). Maybe the ct5v blackwing? But then I have to tell people I own a cadilacacacacac 😅.

Thanks for putting Billy Joel in my head . I hated owning a Cadillac but the atsv was a good car. Not enough fun and too heavy, but it was good for what it was and I didn’t lose any money on it so that was a good experience. Terrible brand, for me anyway. The ct5vbw would be great I think, but I’d imagine it’s a bit heavy for my liking. I saw an Elise Cup in LA a couple weeks ago but it’s gone now. I do consider Elise & Exige but probably won’t go that route. Yeah if you already have the 370…maybe the ct5vbw might be a great cruiser/ gt car.

I live at nearly 8k’ so I think forced induction is my only best option, though I do love the low torque and smooth powerband of a good NA engine. I also consider Boxster/ Cayman but I think I’d have to go with a 2.5 turbo and get a tune. It would definitely be faster than a n/a equivalent.

The GTI is literally the sweet spot...interior, exterior and available upgrades. If I let go of this, I'm simply getting a RHD R32/33 and going completely different.

10+ years into the car's life cycle and it still holds its own in so many aspects. Really speaks volumes as to just how far ahead the Mk7 was when it first came out, and how far it has been able to punch above its weight class. The Mk8 is fine, but it lacks the special sauce that the Mk7 has; some of the charm is missing.

I've got a new RS3 on order and I'm super excited to take delivery by the end of the year. But you'd be a fool to think I'll be letting go of the GTI. It's just too good and I've grown way too attached to it over 157k miles in nearly 10 years. Will be a fun time each morning choosing which one I want to take 😁

If I had to part out my car and sell it today, I'd probably go for the Supra. For a turbo BMW they sound great, don't have any of the usual bmw engine cancer, and are the only current-gen "M" coupe that doesn't weigh 4k+. Motors can take a lot more power than a DAZA, stock for stock. Sitting in one feels special, most of the other luxury-brand stuff feels like you're not really in a sports car.

Reliability-wise, a 4C is a terrible idea, especially with that dry dual clutch.

The 2.5 turbo doesn't even need a tune to be honest! The way the car is designed, the track I drove it on it hit 15 mph faster down the straight than my stage 2 gti. The best part is that it did it lap after lap after lap after lap... After lap... All while never budging on oil or water temp. It's rock freakin solid as is.

Porsche knows how to make a car. Surprisingly though, it felt A LOT like the gti behind the wheel. The only major differences were it needed a lot more brake input for weight transfer and it wasn't nearly as tail happy as the gti. It also felt super light on steering, but that's just a distinctly Porsche thing with the engine behind you.

MK7 GTI 6sp w/PP
Bought my 2017 brand new right out of the showroom in fall of that year. At the time I bought it was the last Silver 6speed w/PP and LP packages. I found it in a Cargurus search and immediately called the dealer and bought it over the phone. Maybe sentimental but my first car was a MK1, and this car is just too damn good to let go, plus I have too much into it. That being said, it is near paid for and as soon as it is, I will be seeking a clean example of one the following to park next to the GTI:

Another Supra, MK4 this time (had a MK3 previously)
JDM Spec Nissan Silvia S14 or S15
Aston Martin Vantage 6 speed - preferably in Tungsten Silver and no newer than 2014 but want the 4.7 V8 over the 4.3
Ferrari Mondial - specifically the T version and hardtop (need to hurry though because these are going up again)
Skyline R34 -specifically a GTT, because screw that GTR iconic car tax.
Toyota Chaser Tourer V - preferably OEM Manual tranny, swapped ones are hard to find done correctly

* hard choices as I like all of them lol. I would get the most joy out of the Supra as I know that chassis extremely well and done motor builds on three of them. One was my car and the other two for friends. All 3 made over 600 wheel and that was nearly 15 years ago. Problem with the Supra is iconic car tax like the GTR. Ultimately I will probably get the Silvia if I can find one. Needs to be 96-98 JDM Spec "Kouki" If I happen to score a good find S15, then a "Spec R" trim. I literally search the Japan auctions daily lol.

EDIT: Although I really want a JDM car to fill that void of my interests, if I ever get this promo at work, then I would have to consider finally getting a Carrera. Stupid expensive but not that far from reach. Maybe a 2 year/3 year old CPO? Chalk color or Carrera White, but ideally Chalk with that crazy cool blue interior and chalk stitching.

What about a manual m6? I don’t want or need a gt car but I do look for those. So much car for the money but a manual with lower miles is hard to find, especially for a decent price.

Miata Is Always The Answer, lol! I recently had a supercharged Miata keep up with me at elevation and I was really impressed. Seems like a great driver’s car for a great price/ cost of ownership. Supra would be great but they’re a bit expensive for what it is, though I love the looks of it with a few mods.

I'm in the same situation. The only car I would trade my 2018 gti would be a 2015+ cayman s or gts. I consider this car not only for it's specs but it's the only car in the market I think it would keep their value.

I've had mine since 2016, bought new, now have 67k miles on it. I don't think I'll ever get rid of it. I absolutely love the thing. Its got great styling, super fun to drive, probably the most aftermarket support of any platform I can think of besides Honda's, and the build quality/feel of the interior is miles ahead of anything I've test driven.
