I went to install VW rear mud flaps on my very new '21 GTI SE this afternoon and had a difficult time getting the wheels off. They're Black Pretorias, standard on SE's this year and both were seized in place. After dripping a small amount of penetrating oil between the wheel and the hub (being very careful to not get any on the brake rotor or caliper), pounding the tire tread area with a rubber hammer and pulling the wheel side to side with my hands, each finally came loose.
I found corrosion around the circumference of the wheel bearing cap and some on the wheel too. I took a Scotchpad wetted with WD-40 and lightly worked around the wheel bearing cap to get the worst of it off. A shop towel wetted with WD-40 worked well on the wheel. Before putting the wheels back on, I worked on a thin coating of anti-seize on to the hub and wheel.
It's probably a result of dissimilar metals, but my wife's '17 Golf Wolfsburg with Dover wheels never had anything like this. I wanted to mention today's find so that owners of '21s are aware. They'd be well served by removing each of their wheels to be sure all is as it should be. I'm glad that I was home in my garage when I discovered this -- I'd have been in a terrible fix if I'd have had a flat tire somewhere. I'm going to pull my front wheels tomorrow and am expecting to find the same thing.
