Who knows the most efficient way to get the 3 bolts of the ball joint back into the control arm? just push super hard on the arm with one hand while maneuvering the bolts in alignment with the other?

Putting a jack under the rotor to lift hasnt worked well. Can't really move the assembly when it's all compressed and pushing back.

I can't remember anymore, I thought there was a hack for this I read years ago.
You shouldn’t really have to move the whole assembly as much as you have to pivot the ball joint by hand… but to be fair over the last few year when I do it I just lift it by hand cause due air bags there is no spring tension I’m fighting, just the weight of the rotor and caliper.

Hmm. I got one side on by standing in the wheel well and pushing with all my weight on the arm with left hand and then using my right hand and knees to move the rotor into position and line up the 3 studs. Very strenuous. Too tired after that to even try the other side.

I'm thinking about how I could get the control arm pressed down while both hands are free. I'd need some kind of very heavy weight / anchor point on the floor and then I could use a ratchet strap and pulley to crank it down and hold it. Or maybe tomorrow I'll be fresh enough to just muscle it.

I forgot I chronicled my first go round doing this 4 years ago back around page 1400 of this thread. I went on and on. Cringe.

Managed to figure out the lower the car is, the more weight you can put on the arm. I was trying to do it with the car at full qj lift height before. Dumb. Lowered it a foot and it was doable.

I think you've done so much to your GTI that it wouldn't make sense to get rid of it.

And if you were, i wouldn't make a lateral change, I'd go to an R at least.

But from what it sounds like, you really want that truck although yours is probably 10 times better than a new one.

Ideally, you'd add a 4th car to the stable, maybe an SQ5 for commuting/family duty. But i know that's probably not in the cards

I’m not a fan of R or S3 personally. The extra 400~600lbs completely kills what I enjoy about my Mk7 (throwing it around in corners). If I went with something that heavy and expensive it would be a ZL1 or a M3.

SQ5 doesn’t do anything for me either. I hate that “suv” or in reality CUV have taken over the market share in the US.

I actually started looking for a fun station wagon (the better version of what CUV owners are in denial about), but I can’t afford a RS6 Avant and nothing much else has my attention (maybe a V60 Volvo).

At this point I’ll probably buy nothing and like it lol.

I try not to be short sighted in that tho. There’s a finite amount of “vehicle” in my fleet before they start getting expensive, especially in comparison to what they’re “worth”. For instance if I blow up the GTI in the next few years, or trash the transmission in the ‘96 F350 that’ll be a large percentage of the total value of the vehicle I’ll be spending to keep it on the road.

If I buy something that checks multiple box in different roles like towing our next travel trailer or 5th wheel, fits all three kids and the wife comfortably, and gets me to work and back without taking too much time out of my schedule to work on stuff beyond regular maintenance.

If I spend 60k on a new truck it’ll likely save me 15k on extensive maintenance on the other two vehicles. If I spend that much I’ll likely keep it 10-20 years till it’s new replacement is well over 100k.

I’m out running around in the wife’s XC90 right now, and driving something with zero issues that’s actually practical for a Sam’s club trip with a seven month old is pretty nice.

Decided to get the GTI out & go truck shopping, but the tiny oil drops I wasn’t too concerned with ended up getting a little worse over my weekend.

You have a 928 sir? So jealous. My parents had I think a 89' s4 model and dad would dare me to go anywhere near it. They didnt keep it long, probably because I was always drooling at it.
