Wastegate Rattle fix?

I had the exact same noise as yours and I fixed it by.. having the turbo replaced under warranty šŸ˜¬ same rattle that happens when the engine is slowing down/rpmā€™s dropping. soon after that the wastegate seized 100% and I got a ā€œnewā€ aka remanufactured turbo put in.

Iā€™ve read people have success with putting nickel anti-seize on the wastegate, which is not really the problem youā€™re having but maybe lubricating it and soaking with penetrant could help the rattle also? not sure but just wanted to mention it.
well that fucking sucks.. hoping this doesnt happen to me.

my wastegate arm started seizing at 20k miles. lubed it 3 times, and it's ok for now. car is still under warranty, but my service advisor told me to remove the tune before they hook it up to Odis or it will get flagged.

I'd be interested if you do fix this. I put some ceramic grease on it which burnt off pretty quickly however it did shut it up. I have some much higher temp grease to put on now but imagine it'll just get hot and drip out. A circlip or something to take the slack would be better!

Or a vagcom way of keeping the turbo closed

I parked in a multi-storey car park today and it sounds horrendous in the cold start.
I had actually contacted a turbo rebuild company and showed them the problem. They suggested some kind of shim but couldnā€™t help me in sizing the circlip etc. So they were no use!!

To be honest if I could easily access the wastegate I would have found a solution by now. Pretty sure coding out cold start is the simplest way but I wouldnā€™t know where to start

VW on these kind of places has "Hot bolt paste" G052112A3, which is often used in TSB's in these king of scenarios like here (AFAIR 2.0 BiTDI had some problem with one of the turbo actuator arm, TSB was telling to clean it and grease with this stuff, 1.4TSI same thing)

Problem is, that G052112A3 is insanely expensive (150USD for 70g/2,47oz) for just one use. From what I found, Febi 26711 and Forch S428 are similar in performance to OE paste and one of these should be much cheaper

Thanks for sharing. In my case it is a rattle between metal components and nothing has seized.

Do we feel packing the void between surfaces with a high temp grease would stop them rattling?
Do we know if the grease sets or is it likely to drip or run off?

Happy to give it a go

I have ordered a tube off Amazon. I will give it a go and try and pack the joints with the grease. Will report back over the weekend

The grease I added shut it up nicely, but it wasn't high temperature enough to last more than 48hrs. I presume it mostly burnt or dripped off. I have not checked.

I purchased some ceramic grease which states upto 1500 degrees (UK) however I haven't applied it and can't comment on how long it would last...

A shim would still be the best bet.. Perhaps find another person with one used for sale and ask for some measurements!

Packed it with the febi grease as best I could but has made very little difference. Will research coding out the cold start

Shame.. Let me know how you get on. Have you tried VW UK? I have extended warranty on mine but havent had the time to drop past them.

I am on the service plan but havenā€™t raised it with them. I donā€™t really see it as a fault as such more a fitment or design problem.

They certainly dont all do this though. A local one to me I went to test drive didn't do it at all. No harm in asking they may have a quick fix

Nope, canā€™t find anything online regarding coding out cold start. That then leaves a shim but I am not in rush to start messing with it. I guess the down pipe needs to come off but not sure how easy that would be on the drive
