Wastegate Rattle fix?

Hello people,

I'm new to MK7 but not new to VW's in general.

My new (to me) Mk7.5 R has developed an annoying rattle. Only does it after a cold start, it goes away after a drive. The noise is coming from the turbo area and I had my wife rev the car while I held and put pressure on the WG and the noise stopped. I've looked and research it and there is not much info on a fix. Unlike the mk6 were you can buy a clip for the rattle, I dont think there is a clip for the Is38 or MK7 in general.

Is there any other way of fixing this without going out and buying an entire new turbo. Before you say "Big Turbo", yes one day soon but in the meantime I rather not hear this nonsense.

I did read there is a nut that can be adjusted? like I said, not much info on this forum or on FB about it.

See video below on noise.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you~

This seems different than the typical wastegate rattle. A lot of us, mine included, report a rattle under load when the engine is lugged regardless of it being warmed up or not. Mine has had it since I bought it. About 78k later, it still does it, and there have been no ill effects to report. Someone more familiar with the MK6 can speak to the clip better, but I was under the impression that it wasn't a "fix" and only to be used to diagnose the issue, but no, nothing like that for the MK7 has ever been released.

Can't hurt to check yours as well. 5 total mounting points for the heat shield. 1 on top at the oil inlet, 2 at the coolant nipple, 2 on the backside facing the DP/turbo.

Are WG arms to supposed to be loose? Like when I reach behind the turbo and grab the actual WG assembly and wiggle it, its loose, weather the car is on or off.. if its supposed to be wiggly then yeah it could possibly be another issue.

I'm getting an oil change next week and having the oil pan replaced at the same time because it's weeping, so I'll have the heat shield checked while it's up on the lift.

Edit: Just read your clarification on where it's at. I'll check it at home haha.

Can someone confirm on their car that this
Darn. Well, was worth a check. My WG rattles as well if I grab and shake it but it doesn't make a sound revving my engine. Maybe the heatshield on the downpipe has lost a weld? Give that thing a few whacks.

Yeah, Im gonna get under the car and check out all the things in that area before I totally conclude it's the WG that's actually making that noise. Ill keep this thread updated unlike the million other threads on here that ive looked at with no answer or real conclusion lol.

Yup. 100% the WG... annoying. Guess ill live with it until I upgrade the turbo as it doesnt seem to be doing anything negative.. Someone on FB said the following:

'3.6-3.8v is the spec range - you can increase/adjust the voltage and run end to end stops and see if that cures your rattle'

Not sure if this will do anything if I do try..

I had the exact same noise as yours and I fixed it by.. having the turbo replaced under warranty 😬 same rattle that happens when the engine is slowing down/rpm’s dropping. soon after that the wastegate seized 100% and I got a “new” aka remanufactured turbo put in.

I’ve read people have success with putting nickel anti-seize on the wastegate, which is not really the problem you’re having but maybe lubricating it and soaking with penetrant could help the rattle also? not sure but just wanted to mention it.
