I haven't been on this forum in a bit. In addition to providing superior lubrication in very cold weather due to the 0W aspect of the oil, it is a true worldwide oil imported from Germany whereas the 5W-40 is a USA only formulation. Check out the bottles. 5W-40 is "Made in USA" whereas the 0W-40 is "Made in Germany" and then imported here. As a result, as of right now, the 0W-40 is technically a "GC" (German Castrol) as well. The Castrol 5W-40 available to the rest of the world is superior to our America only 5W-40 formulation. The American 5W-40 is made from Group III base stock whereas the 0W-40 is a group IV oil with a PAO base. NOACK is higher in the 5W-40. 5W-40 tends to leave worse deposits. 0W-40 oil meets more stringent specifications (MB 229.5) than the 5W-40 does because the 5W-40 is a cheapo American only formula that is not as robust.
And finally, for me, the kicker is that 5W-40, the worse oil, is more expensive! In my location, one can buy 5 quart jugs of Castrol (or Mobil 1) 0W-40 at Walmart for $25 or less when it goes on sale. At $5 per quart it is the best deal going for excellent oil that can compete in its performance with the more expensive boutique oils.
Edit: this obviously just applies to those in the USA. Those in the ROW get the ROW Castrol 5W-40 formulation which, to my understanding, is quite good except that its pour point is not quite as low as the 0W version for those that live in very cold climates.
Great info! I still don't understand if 5w-40 isn't good to run, or if the car runs better on 0w, then why does VW recommend it? I used the Castrol pro OE full synthetic. I order from ecs. From what I've heard, the dealers use some type of synthetic blend?
