Use caution using Mahle oil filter...

Hey guys, I wanted to share this with everyone:

My 3rd oil change with Castrol OE 5w-40, Mahle filter. After 200 miles, my gti started to make a very noticeable knock by the bottom of the motor and my oil temps got as high as 260F.
Talked to VWoA / local dealer, they told me earlier jettas had this problem if an aftermarket oil filter was used due to too much restriction.
Changed oil filter to OEM from the dealer, since day 1 to 2500m later - knock is gone and my temps never get above 230F. Found upon removal of the Mahle filter, some of the sections were stuck together to the point of using a small screw driver to separate.
I'm not saying these filters are bad, just a direction to look towards if anyone else has this type of issue. I just hope I didn't compromise my already compromised turbo

-Changed oil every 3k
-Current mileage is 11,000
-APR intake
-AWE track cat-back
-APR stage 1 LO
-Denso Ikh24 (Installed 500m before issue)
-NGK R7437-8 (installed 500m ago)

I have used Mann and Wix and have had no problems. As an aside, you can do your own research, but since you are obviously serious about the maintenance of your car I would highly recommend that you use Castrol 0W-40 instead of the 5W-40. It is a superior formulation.

What do you mean by engine knock? Like a actual knock knock or was it a slight tapping sound at idle especially when it was cold and after the sai pump is done working?

I'm sticking with 5w-40 until the warranty expires - I've heard great things about it though.

It was a "knock" not a "ping", or "tick". I can't explaine it. It would do it during a cold start every time then if you reved between 2500-3000rpm you could hear it. Wether my filter was / is the cause of not, just a weird series of events once I changed the filter it stopped.

I get that tap occasionally on a cold start then it goes away after a minute or 2. Hmmmm... I been using oem filter only from the dealer. Supposedly it has to do with direct injection.

I Would prefer 0w-40 but the dealer uses 5w40. Do you say it's a superior formulation because of the "0" cold rating rather than 5 or are there other reasons?

I would think if it's an actual knock than there's already irreversible damage done. As for the idea of 0w40 Castrol being approved I get that but it seems like he is particularly hard on engine warranty claims, at least going by what I've heard from people and the dealer. Maybe the dealer is just trying to scare me into paying them for oil changes but who knows.

0w-40 will give you more protection on cold starts. It's just as thick an oil once it reaches operating temperature. This probably isn't the best way to describe it, but it warms up quicker to give you more protection sooner.

Here's the video I took of it , it's longer than it needs to be, but after each rev listen for the knock that comes out of sequence of the rest of the motor. My phone isn't the greatest but.
You can hear it pretty good around 1:00.

Heard it, but mine is a little different. It just has this slight tapping sound at cold start idle after the sai is done working for less then a minute then it goes away. When you apply the gas pedal and rev the rpms up the sound goes away and as soon as it's back to idle you can slightly hear it. You can even hear it standing ten feet away. My lady even heard the sound. Dealer assumed it was the cylinder head lifters so they replaced the assembly at 1500 miles but nothing changed. I think a few experienced this issue and had a thread going and people predicted that it's part of direct injection. I have about 23,000 miles and recently switched to 0w40 from 5w40. The sound is a little scary but I figured after 23,000 miles something should of happen by now so I got use to it.

I think you replied when I first made a thread about it. I think you're right, if it was something that serious, I'd think the sound would get worse and you'd start to see side effects from it.

I get that but was wondering if there was another reason a previous poster said it's a "superior formulation"
