Plot twist: we installed the Fender speakers (actually made by Panasonic) that we removed from my GTI into my buddy's 2013 Tiguan with a small 4-channel Alpine amp and a powered Blaupunkt sub. After running some RCA's and a few power wires, and coding the head unit to output the right signal, this system bangs! I was impressed the Fender speakers don't have paper cones, and the front door woofers have a fairly large magnet.
The rear door speakers slid right into the Tig's factory locations without the need for an adapter ring, but we did have to put a couple screws in them. With a little trimming, the Tig connector fit into the Fender receptacle as well. We just had to re-pin them and splice in the two wires that go to the tweeters.
