Understanding the MK7 PCV function, retrofitting the MK8 PCV, and why catch cans are bullshit(IMO)

The primary problem of the OEM PCV is sucking up oil.

Oil will only be forced/sucked up the block passage if there is a considerable pressure differential. (Pressure in bottom end, vacuum up top in the PCV).

Where I put some holes, allows the PCV to pull vacuum on the valve cover as well (because it does not in stock form, it draws through the passage directly on the bottom end, and eventually vacuums the valve cover via near the timing chains, oil return ports, etc).

If pulling a vacuum on two places, fluid will only be pulled upwards if BOTH are submerged. I suspect the block passage gets fully blocked by oil sloshing, which in combination pulls it up. Apparently for some people the MK8 AOS is not enough to do the oil separation efficiently. OR @GTIfan99 is correct and VW just can't manufacture these things to save their life.

Pulling vacuum in both spots should cut down any chances of slurping oil considerably. It MAY also have the added bonus of allowing oil to drain before it ever makes it to the diaphragm.

Realistically, I'm sure everything going on inside is a chaotic aerated mess, but IMO the reasoning is sound.
I wish there was some kind of pattern that we could point to, x pcv works with this level of tune or engine code, but at least to me, it looks pretty random. That points to a QC issue in my mind.

I'm getting the impression that VW doesn't want us tracking their cars.

You would think having the Clubsport & setting Nurburgring times, they would've seen this issue at some point & found a solution.

I don't think any other car has this issue, Elantra N, Focus ST, WRX. Granted they all have other issues, but it's frustrating.

I'd kill for a CS.

I'm sure if they did, someone would've figured out the part numbers so we could retrofit.
@Track R
Doesn't the CS run a different PCV setup? Or is it the TCR with a different PCV..

I was trying to highlight that it is a well documented video of a fully tuned 400+ HP car. Is gutted, brake upgraded being driven at the Nurburgring by a well capable individual using the 495B PCV w/active venturi (see video) and no smoke.

The 8CS isn't a TCR car, but the car on the video is tuned for more power vs.

Things to note. Engine is stock, fueling unknown. Oil pan has baffling for side/side movement, none forward/back. It likely runs max boost for the stock turbo and brakes on a dime.

What I've seen of tuned S3 on E85 aren't smoking either.

I am really interested in seeing hard data on what percentage of people with untuned cars see these issues on newer PCV revisions. I think basically everyone in this thread is tuned if not on a modified intake/downpipe, etc.

I'm sure VW knows about the problem though, their "solution" was the TCR AOS system. For that market, it's actually needed. But those are $100k factory GTIs. They certainly seem to have worked on it for street cars, given the changes on the 495B part. But no, they don't want people tracking their cars. They don't have the same track-friendly warranties that GM and Toyota offer.

And for what it's worth, lots of other cars have PCV issues. Ecoboosts add extra baffling. Subarus run big heated separators with a return to the pan. BMWs just block off the vent ports on the head, leading to who knows what kind of problems. Many of the aftermarket options are marketed as solutions for carbon buildup, oil starvation problems, or just stuff that breaks way too often.

Misha drove a Stage 2 Mk7 Clubsport about 1-1.5yrs ago. Smoked into and through Carousel. Nothing anywhere else though.
FWIW: Some months back, I went through roughly the last 5 years of every EA888.3 track video I could find, including all of his and Including non US models on other european tracks.

Initially I split it into 3 groups. No rear footage (which I still reviewed for audio), stock and tuned. Most stock on OEM PCV did not smoke, but some did. All tuned on OEM PCV smoked, those which did not, used PCV plates.

I did the same for MK8 cars.
No Evo4 cars smoked, tuned or not.

If you have a link to the video you mention, share it. I may have missed it.

I see more smoking in autocross, but that’s probably my bias and more of the videos I watch. However, it could have to do with the maneuvers being tighter and more abrupt.

FWIW, at the event where I had some severe knock at autocross, I had almost 0 knock when doing track sprints later that day.

My tuned 19 GTI doesn't smoke on BL PCv and a cc.

Just had my shortest track day.

Laps 1-3 warming up tires. Laps 4+5 drove 7/10ths and got smoke after a brake -> right + throttle turn (T1 at NJMP Lightning). Car went into limp mode + went home, will go through logs and share in a bit.

Back to the plate pcv, strike 1 for the car.

Edit: oil was exactly halfway on dipstick cold
