I'm reminded of an article I read years ago in which the author was arguing that the age of tanks as an effective weapon of war is over.

Interestingly the article was talking about the tank's issues with urban environments and terrain like the afgan mountains, particularly because of weapons like the javelin, but suggested it might still be dominant in good tank country. Ukraine is good tank country. I also remember scoffing at the article at the time. Looks like the author was more right than he even realized.

You're almost fighting guerrilla warfare in Ukraine....fast, light & highly manoeuvrable is the order of the day.....Russia is fighting old style...throw cannon fodder at the Ukrainians to wear them down & to force them to use up their own resources.....& at the same time pound their towns with artillery..


Just by sheer bombardment you pound the opposition into submission.....this is why the Ukrainians are pulling out of certain places...they need to conserve their forces & weapons.

We've been getting the lesson globally that guerrilla tactics are extremely effective against the status quo since Vietnam and modern militaries refuse to learn the lesson because everything went by the book once during desert storm.

They're not fighting asymmetrically, they're fighting intelligently. The problem is military planners are always fighting the last war, not the next one.

Trying to invade a country like Ukraine is difficult because only a tiny percentage of the population is on Russia's side. You can flatten it, but you'll be spending the next thousand years looking over your shoulder because there will be some little Ukrainian babushka feeding you a poisoned pie.
A far cry from a place from AFG, where the population didn't give a damn and only had their hand out.
