I really expected more internal pressure on Putin at this point with how poorly things are going. Every one of these generals has to know the war is lost, their country will take decades to recover, and that they're the next one in line to take the blame and "fall" out a hospital window.

I don’t think Putin cares much about the pressure, or about much of anything besides his legacy (pipe dream) of a reunited Soviet Union. I hope for mutiny/ coup every day. I don’t think any one person or group can garner enough pressure to change Putin’s course.

I'm reading a history book right now about the rise of the third Reich leading up to WW2 and it's really interesting some of the parallels with the current situation in Russia. Obviously there's a lot of big differences here (mainly that Ukraine is successfully fighting back), but the common themes of the rest of the world being too focused on appeasement during the early forays into annexation to avoid a larger conflict (Crimea?) and the false premise of "protecting their ethic brothers over the border" are pretty crazy. If not for the added complication of nuclear arms, history would seem to make a strong case for swift military action against Russia by the rest of the world.

Yes, our intel agencies failed us badly by letting us believe that Russia had an actual army. They should have been stepped on in August of 2008 when they invaded Georgia

One of the interesting points in the book I'm reading was that Hitler basically spelled out very clearly what he was going to do in terms of invading other countries and starting a war in that book, but no one outside of Germany read it and the few that did thought it was all bluster and pandering to racist, nationalist base.
