HXP, thx :)

Regarding comparsion of Golf with TSI to Peugeot with HDI/TDCI.
After two weeks with new car, yesterday I took a trip with my old diesel. I noticed few things -
- Golf is much more agile in the city, but as I said before... consumes more fuel in the city.
- Despite lower power 110 vs 122 hp and greater mass the diesel is faster when accelerating at high speed in the range of 110-150 km/h, it is also less sensitive to the hills or load (passengers, baggage).
- The engine is much quieter in the Golf.
- Road noise on some surfaces is noticeably louder in the Golf.
- Suspension in the Golf is louder and overall less comfortable.
- Golf has much more stability at higher speeds.
- Climatronic works better in my old car - it is more efficient and quieter at the same time.

Hi Go GOLF

Picking my car up from the dealer 22/10/2014 so taken the day off work ! Hope to take it for a gentle cruise so I can familarise myself with it a bit in the daylight - winter here so it gets dark at 5pm ( ish ). Will start my fuel log straight away and probably start a new thread to publish the results

My first, "gentle" return trip from the dealer where I bought the car (140 km - approx 90 miles from home) gave me the best consumption so far... 5,8L (48.70 MPG) :D

Well, I wish you to have a lot of fun with the new car :)
...and also I'm waiting for your fuel log to compare our consumption results.

VW Golf Estate SE 1.4 TSI 122 BHP MPG Manual 6 spd

Hi GoGolf,

( Where are you located - not specific address just country you not really North Pole I guess unless you got really good snow chains - I am UK near Bristol just for info ).

Picked up my Golf today at 10 am and glad to say the rain had stopped and it was sunny !

Delivery mileage was 11 miles which I thought very low. Went through all the checks at the dealer and made sure it matched the spec I had ordered.

I was impressed with the quality of the Vienna leather seats , rear camera seems very good and the mirror pack worth having. Not yet tried the park assist as still getting used to the clutch etc as I went for the manual not the auto.

It had just under half a tank of fuel so my first trip was to the local Shell station to brim the tank - it took 34 ltrs & the tank is 50 ltr (11 gallons).

I have recorded the mileage and will start my MPG log once I have put a few miles on it.

On a very gentle ( not going above 2,500 rpm ) 46 mile test drive with a stop for lunch it reported an average of 43.6 mpg. This was a mixture of 8 miles city 30 miles country and a quick 8 miles on the M5 motorway which had roadworks and 50 mph speed limit for half the motorway section.

The instant MPG was hopping around between 50 mpg with 67 mpg flashing wildly for a few seconds so hopefully it will all settle down over the next few miles otherwise it seems to erratic to give much useful info - but that may be me getting used to it. It then started to rain again so headed home.

43.6 mpg - Not very scientific first MPG readings but as I said once half a tank used will do a more formal one as (you ) Go Golf did.

The other thing I liked was the gear change indicator which ( I think ) gives you an advisory ' change up ' indicator I when it shows you current gear you are in and an arrow right to the next highest gear.

I set the profile for normal steering eco engine but normal aircon so will see what results that produces.

Stop start and auto handbrake take a bit of getting used to but seem good.

A(daptive) C(ruise) C(ontrol) ACC works really well - I even used it in a suburban environment and it worked well - but really suited to dual carriageway motorway I think.

One frustration is that I can see the ' trip ' distance on the display but can't seem to see the ' total distance' what used to be the odometer reading ie the car has done 0,000 miles since new as I need that for my MPG brim to brim.

One odd thing I do miss is the footwell illumination which I had in the Focus - such a silly little option I never really even thought about it. Seems an odd thing to omit on an SE spec vehicle.

I am really pleased with the fit and finish of the car and the nice touches like the halfway opening rear parcel cover and the storage location for it if you want to remove it - again small details but makes a difference.

Have to pop into the office tomorrow and taking the Focus - but only because I want to drive the Golf a bit more before I put it through multi storey car park door banging other drivers.

Hopefully not bored any one with this and will start the MPG log in a few days ... currently reading the manual ... but if anyone know how to see total miles ... let me know.

......One frustration is that I can see the ' trip ' distance on the display but can't seem to see the ' total distance' ....

The total ODO distance km/miles is displayed to the left of trip value. If you have activated ACC the ACC-symbol is displayed at the same place as the ODO distance total. Disable ACC – you will see it again. When the ignition is off the distance always is visible.

Golf 7 TSI 1.4 122 Estate gives you much value for the money, very lean!

I see you like the car so far - so good start :)

I'm from Poland. :)

Tomorrow I'm going to change my summer tires into winter package. At first I thought I will just buy winter tires and put them on the original alloy rims (16"). But in the end I ordered 15" steel rims and I will put on them Googyear Ultragrip 195/65 r15 tires (I had them only few months on my previous car).

I hope the Golf will be a little bit more comfortable and quieter on this set (higher and narrower profile). Well... But I don't even know do I need winter tires at all... The last winter was very warm, we nearly didn't have the snow... :(

Regarding gear indicator... I find it useful but sometimes is it just too optimistic. For example when I'm driving uphill on the lower gear (let's say 3'rd gear) it indicates to change two gears up - to 5 gear... when I do that... I feel and hear it is just not good for the engine because it is starting to vibrate etc...

Delivery mileage in case of my car was 8 km... (approx 5 miles).

As for the fuel consumption - I can confirm that in the city my Golf returns more or less 28 MPG.
In the next few days I will have some highway driving so we will see what will be the MPG result.

Thanks Swede

Sorry Go Golf this was meant for you -

For the Heading meant to type your name - i will be interested to get your figures.

As for the winter tyres - better on steel rims I think as less fragile than alloys and not so subject to cosmetic damage.
