Buying utilitarian cars used is usually not an issue. Usually, what you see is what you get. Do a good inspection, check for service/accidents, done.
Anything fun or sporty, I buy new. I always feel a little bad when I trade a car in, the poor sap that buys it has no idea it's been tracked and beat to death. Even if you take good care of a car, tracking is tough on cars at a different level.
