I wonder why it took 3 turbo revisions to finally get it right any thoughts. I assume a 16 plate would have the latest revision that's of course if they have fixed the problem. Just looking at a pp that's all.

I have a 10/14 build date 2015 with the "T" revision. I'm not exactly sure which ones grenade more often.

No, I believe L is the latest, but I believe one or two people may have had those blow.

I have no proof, but I believe all the turbos are the same and the letters are just batches. There are some old ones running just fine still and like others have said, the forums are a very small percentage of users out there and even then the issues aren't that common

My original 16' blew and I forgot which revision. I went down to a late 15' IS20 and that lasted well over 10,000 miles before I took it off and went IS38.

Bumping an old thread, as I know some of the GTIs in 2015, if not also 2016 had bad turbos.

If anyone has the answer, I just wanted to confirm that there is no need to check for the latest turbo revision if purchasing a used model because it can be replaced due to the recall?

I had a REV T, it was fine, build date of April 2014.

It was the early tunes that were destroying turbos (27-30 PSI LOL), and some manufacturing issues didn't help.

Any 2016+ GTI should be fine.

what do you think is causing the premature failures.
Absolutely Gobsmacked.

No one really ever clarified why the 16' revision turbos were more durable and less prone to exploding vs the previous years. As a guess, I assume the bearings and impeller design were changed? Would be awesome if someone who knows more could chime in.

It's all speculation on the differences in revisions. I still believe the "revisions" are just batch identifiers. Maybe slightly different sourced internal parts, but all spec'd the same and designed the same.

Something was altered enough to make them not grenade anymore.

More the tunes were altered. There were a few 2016s which blew on ED's v8.2 file but ever since v1.x have been out on them, no issues

Edit - not saying none have blown, but far less.. I can't recall the most recent on the forum
