Would be curious if you notice an improvement in fuel economy after replacing the 215k mile injectors
I should call around and see if anyone will do the labor on it if I bring the parts. I’m normally down to try pretty much anything in terms of working on my own car, but I’m hesitant on this one. I’m sure it’s not as hard as I’m making it out to be in my head but it is something I’ve never done on any car before.I caved and just had my shop do injectors. Some things I'm just leaving to the professionals until I can monetarily afford to fuck things up.
I’m averaging 27 over 2400 tracked miles with about 60-70% being highway. It’s worth noting that in the PNW they’re aren’t really any flat stretches of highway. I’m almost always contending with some type of hill. I see others that get better mpg but they live where it’s flatter. To be fair 27 isn’t bad when the rating is 25 combined but I’m interested to see that as wellWould be curious if you notice an improvement in fuel economy after replacing the 215k mile injectors
I feel you. I'm pretty much the same way, but simply can't take the financial hit right now if I mess anything up.I should call around and see if anyone will do the labor on it if I bring the parts. That's pretty solid! A friend of mine was in the same ballpark with his lower mileage Alltrack iirc driving in hilly western PA.I’m averaging 27 over 2400 tracked miles with about 60-70% being highway. I bought my injectors on FCP Euro for the lifetime warranty, brought them in and the shop did the install. I'm sure whatever shop you find won't mind but generally the shop has to make some coin too so they would obviously prefer to source their own parts.
If you find the right shop that's as passionate as you are, I'm sure they ultimately won't care.

Re: doing injectors, I had to pull mine out on my A4 (EA888.2) when I did a carbon cleaning and it wasn't bad. In hindsight IDK why I didn't replace them at the same time lmao, but it was pretty straight forward and not as difficult as I would have expected to get them reseated. That said, some projects totally aren't worth the anxiety of doing them, so I can't blame you for outsourcing that operation.
I would go in assuming the valves haven't been cleaned and count yourself lucky if they are. I worked at an Audi dealership for some time and the service manager told me they don't do carbon cleanings unless there is an issue present which they believe to be caused by it. Might as well just tell your shop to do it with the injectors, otherwise you'll end up having to pay the labor to pull the intake manifold off again down the road.Which brings me to my other hesitation, what if I need carbon cleaning? It would be silly to have the manifold off and then not clean the valves if they're caked up. If I have a shop do the injectors and it needs to be carbon cleaned, then they can just do it at the same time.
Though I'm hoping that when the previous owner had the dealer replace the water pump at 207k miles, they did a carbon cleaning as well. I don't get any cold-start misfires or have signs of coked up intake valves.
Fortunately the injectors only seem to be an issue if the motor is hot and I'm stuck crawling in traffic. It hasn't happened yet at cruising speeds which is nice, the EPC light I mean.
