something to consider.....how fast a car do you want? For me the GTI goes as fast as I should be driving on the street. In some ways driving a slow car fast is more fun than fast car slow. I own a 4x4 Taco for when I need snow capabilities. That being said the price point where you are makes an R a bargain compared to this side of the pond.

*your* Taco is slow?!? Strap on a 400lb glorified tent, armor, and all the requisite broverlanding gear in the bed.

My stock GTI is a veritable F1 car in comparison.

Coming from a stg2 '15 Gti to a stock '18R, I can tell you it's a huge upgrade Imo.

If you can afford it, do it.

This is the path I went and I agree. I loved my Gti but the R is an upgrade in almost every way.

I would totally do it. I came from a Unitronic Stage 2 B7 A4 with Quattro to my GTI. I definitely miss being able to put down all of the power even in the wet. (I'm in Seattle so its always wet.) When I bought my GTI, I had my heart set on the Golf R but no one would let me test drive one. I also was only looking at MK7.5 so there werent any used R's near me. I got $5000 off MSRP on my GTI SE which put me $12,000 away from the Golf R. Being a cheap ass, I couldnt justify paying that much for just the IS38 and AWD since the 2019 comes with PP. I would have glady paid $4,500 more, but not $12,000 more.

One thing people always miss when talking about how "fast" do you want to go is context. What does fast mean to you.

Fast from a roll on the highway?
Fast 1/4 mile?
Fast on a bumpy back road?
Fast stop light warrior?

What does fast mean to you?

My idea of going fast is tracking and twisty back roads that can be pretty bumpy. I'd get a PP GTI, decent tires, rear sway and a stg1 tune. Best bang for the buck.

When I lived in Connecticut, I'd have bought the R.

Between an Autobahn GTI and R, R every day. GTI only makes sense in S and SE trims.

I thought about it, but it never snows and hardly rains where I live. That plus the 10k difference made it an easy choice. I put the leftover money towards mods and tools.

Yeah, I too would get the Golf-R while you can and if you want a tossable fun little FWD hatch, I recommend adding a lightly used Fiesta ST later in your line up. I did exactly that and have no complaints.

I absolutely love my GTI SE but if the difference is only $4500 to the R? as others have said: yes.
