Swapping gti PP for R

I've only had the golf PP for a few days and have seen my local dealer has an R just come in stock, white DSG, My GTI is a DSG.

I have 30 days to exchange albeit pay the difference.

Any opinions from those who have done the same?

What is the real mpg difference?
Is it really better on snow and ice?

It'll cost me 4.5k more.

It is a completely different driving experience. The GTI feels lighter and more "tossable" and is possibly more fun in dry, warm weather. The R is clearly better in poor weather and even good weather "lays down the power" better.

The GTI will have wheelspin in many instances.

for 4.5k do it bro. The Golf R has so much more tuning potential plus no wheel spin. Amazing you actually have that option. Plus better resale value. Of all the cars I have had over the years the R32 was my favorite because of the all wheel drive.

You might not be too impressed with a stock R compared to your GTI, but put a tune on it and you've got a beast. I can't believe how quick these things are with even just a stage 1 tune. I went from a stage 2 mk6 gti to a stock R and the R felt just about as quick as my GTI did. Difference being even my mk6 gti at like 250hp/280tq had a traction problem. Now I've got about 100 more hp and tq in the R and it's just a fuckin rocket that grips, no additional mods required.

Your mpgs are going to drop about 4mpg in the city and on the highway, but when you feel those g-forces in 1st and 2nd and you're giving your passengers butterflies you won't care about the mpg difference.

GTI vs R is a never ending discussion here. Personally GTI is more fun and the real world price difference (considering discounts) in US is more than $10k. I couldnt justify myself the premium for a R. I had a set of winter tires with my previous GTI and it was very capable to handle Michigan winters.

In your case, the difference is $4.5k and a test drive might give better insights on the difference.

This has been covered a million times. GTI is a little more tossable, R puts down power. GTI can be had a lot cheaper for lower trim levels, R holds value better.
