Sudden Perfume Smell

Hey, man. I'm just responding to comments and quotes... And I've got to correct about half of them in a thorough manner for people who can't seem to read.

I'd rather not type the same thing over and over again, but that seems to be what's required.
Why? Obviously no one is reading what you posted before.

Well, the dealer and I are fine. Spent quite a bit of time bullshitting with them, and making sure VW wasn't giving them a hard time or anything, talked about potentially trading it in if it happened again, and so on. I believe they've changed dramatically over time, and that their reputation is now undeserved. Given the fact that the reputation exists and VW was passing bad information, my suspicion was wrongly directed there. They just got thrown under a bus after VW care misinterpreted their report. They tried to correct, but VW had already assumed the wrong thing and passed it to me.

Apparently, once something is on that book, it's largely permanent. Pretty good to know in relation to potential modifications, actually.

They've got a suspicion something was cooking off from the factory, but as long as it's gone I don't care, and it is indeed gone. When I say gone, I mean absolutely no trace whatsoever. That's pretty amazing.

What the VW rep did was wrong. The issue was stupid; just a smell, but that doesn't change the fact that she did the absolute wrong thing. You must understand that just because an issue isn't particularly severe, that doesn't mean people can't make severe mistakes in the process of handling it. She gave me inaccurate information, and had everyone thinking there was some massive warranty issue, when all I wanted was a smell investigated before finding out how much I'd need to pay to get rid of it.
So what the hell was the smell?

I'm recovering from injuries, and I've nothing better to do. It's just entertainment that I can handle even if I'm doing really bad.

Also, I like the sounding board, even if sometimes it's just a brick wall. Even the most inane questions or accusations can get the mind turning in a different direction. :)

Our best hypothesis is something that was left there at the factory and just fell loose somewhere hot, or a clump of dried detailing material from the selling dealership that encountered the same misfortune.

Whatever it was, it must have been able to degrade or otherwise burn off without actually burning or leaving any residue.

Nothing I could have sucked into the engine bay when driving would have entirely dissipated without a trace. Everything it actually smelled like would have either burned or remained present.

It must have turned entirely into a gas, as there isn't a slightest trace of an odor even left in the cabin air filter. That would also explain it's immediate appearance, extreme potency, and sudden disappearance.

Beyond that... Like a Bigfoot documentary... We may never know.

I suppose I could send the cabin air filter to a lab for analysis. Just because the smell is gone doesn't mean it couldn't have left an identifiable trace.

You might have set a record for the number of posts in one thread without finding what caused the problem. Glad that it's fixed.
Thanks, me too.

Now I get to put my carbon filter in, which I was really looking forward to. I haven't bought a new car in a very long time, and while I've had some fancy stuff, none of it had any modern filtration.

So, I am excited to not only have it, but improve it.

You know, I got one of those customer care survey e-mails last night. I always fill them out; generally with praise, as usually people are doing their jobs quite well.

If they're doing their job properly, regardless of how it affects me, I give them a good review. I'm the kind of guy who gets stabbed in the back and thanks the offender for teaching me a lesson, and I know the difference between a person and a policy. If I have an issue with a company's representative, it's because they did not do their job; not because I didn't hear what I wanted to hear. This lady didn't do her job, and was a discredit to Volkswagen as a corporate entity.

After observing the care in which I reply to even the most inane webernet posts, I'm sure it's not difficult to imagine that I was quite thorough in my response to that survey. I don't know if anyone at VW actually reads those, but I was asked about the experience and I responded in clear (much more concise than usual because it's actually important) detail.

They got it right down to the fact that she told me several times that she's the only person within Volkswagen with whom I'm allowed to speak; jumping the gun by telling me that she "doesn't have a supervisor" regardless of the fact that I never asked to speak a supervisor. Dick move, lady; I just asked if there was someone else I could speak with because we were having a seemingly interminable misunderstanding that was turning into an argument. I like debate as much as the next guy, but conflict and argument doesn't get us anywhere. They got the fact that she threw the dealer under the bus, as well... They got everything. All of it.

We all know people like her. They're the sort that "doesn't like drama", and has one of those RBFs (learned that term recently and I've been waiting to use it) and a sassy attitude. Doesn't have a supervisor... WTF 🤣

Well, I suppose she's just a shadowy billionaire that owns a majority share in several shells that collectively control VW group who also moonlights as a customer care specialist.

"Is there anyone else there I can talk to*, because we are having a seemingly interminable misunderstanding, here, and I don't want to argue"

"I DON'T HAVE A SUPERVISOR, SIR"

Uhh... Okay? How many cats and/or horses do you have again? No, no. I didn't say that, but I sure as hell thought it. 🤣

*A deliberate Monty Python French insult reference; I'm always joking, even when I'm irritated. I don't think she caught it. I went to the trouble of replicating the inflection, too...

If you're wondering how I can crank out unrealistically perfect English on the fly when in a "voice" discussion, and why I seem to be able to remember it, it's because I'm cheating.

I know I can't speak properly anymore, so I program responses and phrases ahead of time, under the assumption that without them, I might struggle to complete a sentence. Got the idea from watching Eminem speak in regard to how he "rap battles" so well. He keeps a box of phrases to which he's always adding, and when required, they surface. He doesn't have to "remember" them.

Great idea, and very helpful in life when your brains have been rattled a little too much.

Not poking fun at you, just wondering what happened that disabled you? You've mentioned it a few times and I'm genuinely curious.

Probably should point out that I mention it quite a bit because it's good for me to do so; especially on automotive forums where people might wonder why I don't do certain things. Context is important. I've historically been extremely secretive and private, and tried to hide everything about myself, especially weaknesses and other things like that.

Now I'm sort of trying to find the balance as far as sharing goes. It's new to me, nobody knows me here, and I'm trying to start out a little more open. If I'm more open, I can have more fun, attend events, and people can get to know me better. Might take me a while to learn where the line is appropriately drawn. Assume I'm like a kid who's for the first time learning when it's appropriate to share things.

Injuries and illnesses are the cause, primarily. I kind of leaned into travel and remote security over time, and you just plain get hurt doing that, though two concussions were from competition back when I'd willingly climb into a ring. Some malaria stuff, a recent bout with an illness I'd never heard of, broken bones, head injuries, busted intestines; things of that nature. It just all came back to bite me at once and I've been fighting with it for a few years now. Spend my mornings worshiping a toilet, try to eat, find out I'm only renting it; deep-throat some oxygen, and do my best to get things done.

A half hour of effort can cost me three days of uselessness, so I pick and choose what I do beyond work very carefully.

I got knocked down by an illness while recovering from the results of injuries, and had no strength to fight it, is all. I was already addled, and Rocky Mountain fever finished the job because I just had no defense.

Don't worry, I've learned my lesson. 🤣

Thanks. Live and learn, and all that.

It's always good to remember that even if you survive something today, you may end up paying for it later. I knew I wasn't invincible, but as it turns out, that was only half the lesson. :)

This is why if I do pick up a wrench, it's only going to be for something I think is super fun, and only when I can.
