Stop Start error & ACC not working

Hi All

I’ve posted about this issue once before and I thought I’d ask again, but this time provide all of the codes available. At first it didn’t bother me that the ACC didn’t work, but I’m doing more motorway journeys that would really be easier if the ACC worked. I have got limited diagnostics attached below, so would anyone be able to help me understand it? As far as I know there is no communication with the front radar (dome shaped) which is causing the stop start and ACC to not work. Is there any way for me to disconnect and reconnect the radar and if so can someone be kind enough to show me how!! I’ve had enough of seeing the stop start error everytime I turn the car so just want the problem sorted. Side note: I’ve had the battery replaced but this has not rectified the issue, so any help would be greatly appreciated. There’s also a code for control module incorrectly coded, but my parking sensors work fine?

here is the diagnostic

Yeah I don't see an ACC module there, so looks like it can't be reached on the CANBUS. That suggests you either have a wiring issue, or the radar module is defective.

Hmm that’s not good 😬 could it just be as simple as unplugging it and plugging it back in and if so how do it do that? I can see a plug coming from the bottom of the radar, shall I try that? If I do need a new radar, how much would this cost (the part, fitting and would it need calibration?) is there a guide on how to remove the plug on the radar, because I’ve looked and there isn’t much space

thanks

I'm afraid not.

First thing to try would be to check continuity on all of the wires leading up to the radar. From memory, there should only be four. Two CANBUS, one power, and one ground.

If all the wires are fine, I'd be replacing the radar. Yes, it should require calibration.

It’s chucking buckets right now so I’ll check when it’s done. Last time I checked they seemed to be there but I’ll have another look

I’m guessing I’ll just have to buy another, would any old one do off eBay? And how much would calibration cost?

You're not looking for whether the wires are still there, you're checking continuity! Power and ground are simple, but for the CANBUS wires there's a connection block on the passenger side behind the trim where you can check the first leg of the run.

I'm not completely familiar with the dome radar, but my understanding is that it's much easier to swap as there's no component protection. In other words, yes, a matching used part from eBay would be fine.

Calibration can vary depending where you go. Cheapest I've seen is £130 at VW Retrofit in Redditch. Some VW dealers will charge in excess of £500 as they insist on a full wheel alignment first.

As you can see I’m not very mechanically minded! I still have no idea what checking for continuity means.

and yes mine is the dome shaped radar and I’ve found one on eBay here, is it any good? And that’s good to hear, hopefully I find a working one as I can’t seem to find the dome shaped one anywhere

I’ll need to find a calibration area near me before I purchase one, hopefully I can find one under £150

You'll need to check your current part number first. It'll be on the back of the radar.

How do I go about doing that 😂 is it easy to take off the radar and look at the back - I notice that the dome itself has a cover on it, how can I take this off

Best to leave the radar in place if you can. Try and slide your phone in and take a picture of the back.

The cover should just unclip.

Just thought I would pipe up here since I'm having trouble with my front radar at the minute, it's the one with the domed front too.

Mines intermittent, 50% of the time in the morning when I start the car I get the usual ACC not available and Stop-Start not available. If I stop the engine and start again then usually it will work fine.

I've replaced my battery recently, recoded with VCDS. The fault seemed to go away for a while but has returned with a vengeance after we had a long period of rain last week.

The Plug on the bottom of the Radar sensor has 4 wires if you don't have lane assist, 6 if you do have it. 2 of them are power (12V) and ground. The 12V comes from Fuse SC32 in the cabin, not sure where ground is connected physically.

The 2 (orange) wires are CANBUS and go back to the CAN-Gateway module which is located on the underside of the steering column, pins 7 and 17. You can check for continuity from these 2 pins back to the radar unit, you can access the CAN Gateway by pulling the flip down cubby thing open by the drivers right knee. If you have lane assist then the remaining 2 wires on the radar plug supposedly head up to the camera on the windscreen, not sure what colour these are because I don't have this on my car.

Hope this helps... someone...

Hi Dave, sorry about the (very) late reply!

thanks for mentioning this, how hard would this be for someone with virtually no experience or skill set to do (me) 🤣. I really do want this to work but just keep putting it off. If it’s possible would I just be able to get this wiring sorted, how do I check if the radar itself is good? - I may have a stab at having a look at this canbus wiring but how would I check if it’s working or needs repairing. I also have the domed radar too. Lastly how much would this cost for me to either do myself or pay someone to do??
Once again thanks for your post 🙏

I will be honest with you I just want my stop start to work 😭 I’m sick of getting the “stop start error” everytime I start the car. The weird thing is, i don’t have any errors for the ACC or front assist unless I go into the menus to try and adjust them
