Sport and Sound Pack on GTD

Here's what it says on the configurator

"This sound generator enhances the aural sensation for the driver and other passengers. In 'Sport' mode (using the Driver Profile Selector) there is an additional acoustic emphasis to the sound of the engine inside the car, with no additional noise externally."

In November past VW added it to the factory extras list. The cost of this option is now £255.
I had originally ordered it with my GTD, but on learning it was only a speaker inside the car to fool the driver I asked for it to be removed from the order.

I ended up buying the GTD elsewhere, as they had one in transit from the factory. It is a new build car, only arriving this week. On collection I notice the car definately has this extra when driven in sport mode... My wife and kids all agree.

But it was not ordered and I think it is probably in all GTDs, regardless of whether or not it was requested.

I'd be pretty pissed if I had shelled out the £255 and found others were getting it for free.

So, anyone else out there can confirm it is in their car?
And who has ordered it as an optional extra?

Oh, and it sounds naff!

I've always been told its a standard fit, never seen it listed as an option.

Honestly, I can't tell that much of a difference between the sound in sport and otherwise, I just happen to be going further up the rev range more commonly in sport mode...

There has been talk on the forum before about an option for an external speaker type thing, stuck in/around the exhaust I believe: so you can piss off the neighbours more effectively.

Not sure if this was a GTD option though, might have just been a GTi/R thing.

I posted about it last year and some people on here informed me it was a speaker in the bulkhead possibly. This was confirmed by a salesman in Seat... the FR has it, as does the Skoda VRS.

VW are the only ones charging for the honour. But is it still there regardless???

It's not just you I can't tell the difference either (not that I use sport mode) but I have to pop to the shop so will stick it in sport mode and leave the radio off and see if I can hear anything

Well, just popped out, put the car in sport mode, proceeded along and thought 'yep it does sound sort of sporty' then put it back to normal mode, brought the revs up and it sounded the same

Two different things chaps...

First thing - the VW UK description of the optional 'Sport & Sound Pack' is (surprise, surprise) wrong... in fact it could not be more wrong.

As standard, on the GTD (only), you get a 'Sound Aktor' - its a device located at the engine bulkhead that delivers a 'growly' sound in to the cabin (when sport mode is selected).

If you chose the 'Sport and Sound' option package - you get this device plus a speaker actually built in to the exhaust system to provide an external 'sporty' sound together with red painted brake callipers.

I have no idea why VW UK are unable to describe the option correctly - enough cars with it on have been delivered already ans there are plenty of photos on the various forus showing it. The two visual pieces of evicence are:

1. red brake callipers.

2. Straight through exhaust (ie; no rear box visible undeneath the rear of the car).

Cheers for that Mark, I take it on the petrol GTI, it is natural acoustics then? And the option is more for the diesel to let them sound less diesel like?

Not long to you get your new car then :)

Have you heard of any more people getting there GTD with the Sport & Sound pack including the Red Callipers and speaker in the exhaust?

Mine has been given a build date at last of w/c 16/3/14 so fingers crossed I might get it for the end of the month, cant wait.

Cheers, Paul

I personally would have had it, just for the red callipers. As you said, pity VW couldn't get the description right.

I'm sure there are others out there who think their GTD deserves them.

Thanks for clearing that up !

Not both - you will get a cabin 'Sound Aktor' which will only provide internal cabin sound when set in Sport driving mode. You will not get anything else in terms of an exhaust speaker or red brake callipers unless you ordered and paid for the optional 'Sport & Sound Pack'.

Hope that clears up your query.

Betty - you are very welcome!

No not long now - thanks!

Yes seen plenty of members on various forums getting this option and it comes with all the above mentioned items. As the Sound Aktor thing is still fitted to all GTD's (despite VWUK;s denial!) the option pack in reality consists only of the red callipers and the exhaust speaker (ie the exact opposite to what VWUK describe!) - and you need to take a view on whether or not this is considered good value for money.
