I never drove an Mk7 GLI, so I couldn’t say for sure.
I can say that the current new and used car market is insane, so just be careful on that end. I got my wagon through Carmax, because their prices were reasonable. and while I don’t normally do “aftermarket” warranties on new or used cars, I researched Carmax’s warranty and felt like it was worth getting. Especially after talking to a neighbor that is a mechanic at Carmax.
Do you have to have a Mk7 GTI or GLI? You could always go with a Mk6 on either car or even an Audi A3 or A4, which, depending on the area, could be cheaper than trying to get even a Golf R. I live in Utah, so anything with AWD costs more.
