Haha, pretty much. I think it's a sonar sensor for the ParkPilot thing (the ones that tell you how far you are from objects and can parallel park for you). This is the Autobahn edition, so they might be unique to that on the side?

Those sensors on the side are used for Park Assist, where the car can park itself. The R does not have them at all (at least in Australia, it's not available for them) and therefore is never seen with them.

They also come in handy in general as the car can show you if objects are near on all sides when you are in reverse, not just when using Park Assist, so they come in handy all the time.
