Definitely extractor. Cheaper than going to the stealership after the 1st use, you can buy oil when its on sale. I live in an apartment and do it in my stall.
Takes me like 45 minutes if Im lazy. Video for reference.
one of the reasons, catches of dealers doing the oil change is the yearly service stamp. Which supposedly helps the resale of the car. Although i suspect the extra money you gave the dealer for the stamp would out way the benefits from having a full service history.
I only do 4-5k a year but they always suggest yearly oil change. Is it even bedded in with that amount of miles lol
Lol stamp no they dont do that they just give u ur invoice lmao and i do it every 11k so twive a year basically since i drive all over ontario for mtb trails
What has been said above. Unless you have VWcare and they're doing it for you for "free", there is absolutely no reason to take it to a dealer. Extractor makes it super easy, especially with the top mount filter.
Make sure you save your receipts from oil and filters, even an order history from ECS or BFI works. If you don’t, they’re in legal bounds to do some fuckery if you end up with a repair that falls under warranty.
The dealers around me have not proved to be competent with their service work through my experience. I have a couple third party shops around me I trust.
That all being said I still use a an oil extractor at home to do my oil changes. With an extractor its a 15 minute job that is not messy. I save a bit of money doing it this way and know exactly the oil and filter that is being used and amount of oil that came out. Most inconvenient and time consuming part is dropping off the oil at the local auto parts store to be recycled. Highly recommend doing your own changes with an extractor.
You can generally leave the old oil in the extractor until you've emptied out the new containers and refill. Can also just take the extractor in to have the used oil emptied at a Recycler, i've done that a few times here. I just normally pop the top off before I hand it over to them so they don't end up confused.
If you're worried extractors won't get everything, buy 7 quarts of oil and pour in a half quart and re-extract. Anything left after that is going to be extremely diluted - or just alternate and change from the bottom every other time. Extractor makes easy work as the oil filter is up top and not on the bottom.

I wasn't aware Castrol Edge is some high performance stuff, . You're way overthinking this...unless you DIY it, I'd look into dealer's coupons and use it - I am sure they have to use proper grade / approvals oil whether it's Mobil, Castrol..etc. I wouldn't take it to Jiffy Lube or one of those places.
To me, just the potential risk of having some dumbass mess up something on my car is enough reason to do it myself. No one takes cares about my car like I do (obviously, its my car), so I rather do it myself and avoid any potential headaches.
Honestly I like taking my car to the dealer for maintenance. I have a very good impression of VW dealers (at least 2 out of 3 that I've been to). They have a nice big garage that you drive into, prompt service, and a nice big waiting lounge with a glass wall that overlooks the shop so you can watch them work on your car. And a free coffee bar with barista.
Sure, they'll try to get you to pay for things you don't need - but at least now it's easy to defer those things with the new smartphone system. They send me a text with a link to their "recommended services" and I can simply check the boxes for what I want them to do and what I want to defer.
Surprisingly, the VW dealer in my area is nicer than the Audi dealer.

A reputable performance shop does my oil changes every 5,000 miles. They also look over the car while it's there which provides me with some peace of mind.
I would never trust a dealership (bad experiences) and I don't do it myself because I'd rather not spend my free time changing oil.
