Shift knob adapter

Does anyone sell a shift knob adapter to use standard threaded shift knobs (M12x1.25 is specifically what I'm looking for).

I've seen people tap the metal shaft itself, just gotta make sure the chips don't fall down into the pivot ball.

So I'm guessing there's no option that doesn't involve cutting the shaft? Kind of sucks that each company makes their own adapter to use their own proprietary knob.
