Sandman, interested as to what you'd use to lower the car. Are you doing Driver Gears to retain DCC functionality as well as a more OEM-like (or conservative) drop? Are you getting one of the various upcoming DCC coilovers??
I am not an expert on this so I have to trust my vendors.
I plan to keep the VW DCC shocks as I have paid for them.
According to Tirerack the springs I picked work with DCC.
They had a close out sale on Eibach Pro-Kit. Listed as a 1" drop.
I only want a slight drop so I do not look like I am driving on strut pucks and it will look better with my OZ wheels.
The Pro-kit is a dual stage winding so I hope for the 1" drop and maybe a slight ride improvement on normal smooth roads. (I might be dreaming).
I do worry about rubbing, which is not an issue now.
Install.
I think I have the skill do so myself but not all the tools nor experience to trust myself with my new car. I emailed my dealer and asked the service rep I talked to last month during my 20,000 mile service to quote the cost for the install.
Along with the install will need alignment and LP adjustment I think. Will see what they send back. Then will see if I do while I am off at the 4th of July.
Question for others:
ECS Tuning sells a front spring mount upgrade kit. These are beefed up saddles for the upper and lower spring mounts. I wonder if this is worth it or is it needed. I know not needed but while it is being taken apart would it be worth the upgrade? The kit is around $200 if you look up to see which one I am asking about. Sorry I am not linking, but can not on my phone. The cost is not a big deal unless they give me a huge quote on spring install.
Why am I thinking about it? I work in Industry and in past life was a Maintenance Manager. If I can improve the machine and make more durable I find in long run it is a benefit. I normally keep my cars at least 10 years. This way I will be 60 and can buy an R next or a 300hp Club Sport!
I could not give you advice on the ECS hardware but at 20,000 miles I would change those mounts for sure, I would also get new bolts.

Well trucks are heavy duty machines, but I think that strut mounts is one of those items that although take lots of abuse once you take them out and put them back on for some reason could start making noises God knows why, is like putting new tires on a slightly bent wheel, you didn't notice that it was out of whack before but installing new tires you will notice in a second, also I would normally change every bolt that I take out but that's just me being OCD, stretch bolts are recommended to be replaced regardless of milage.

Installing springs isn't easy if you haven't done it before and don't have access to a lift or the right tools. I did mine myself and having never done them before it was a learning experience. I had a lift and full access to a compressor with air tools and had a hard time with the front suspension. Literally had to unbolt the axles, ti rods, control arms, etc to get the knuckle to drop down far enough, then getting the strut out of the knuckle was very very hard. I couldn't imagine doing without the proper tools on a driveway with Jack stands like some people do.I am not an expert on this so I have to trust my vendors.

Don't worry about rubbing. I don't know your offset but IIRC you're on 8x18 wheels with 235's, which is the same as me. with a conservative drop you'll have more than enough breathing room before rubbing even becomes an inkling of a concern. you'd probably only ever rub if you hit the bump stops, which is something i highly doubt you'd ever do![]()
Hi Sandman, haven't been on this forum as much lately. (Busy at work) But glad to see you are still enjoying that GTI! It's coming together nicely.
Thanks.
I love my RE-11 tires this summer.
Nice to see you are still working on the car.
Love your car sir. I can't wait to "join the club" tomorrow!
