Ha-ha - I wondered how long it would be before someone spotted the Nightforce sticker. That's on my son's box - mine has logos from many others on it.

This is the view forward of the car.

Punching holes - always fun.:)
Looks like a nice location.

1st Car Show!

In two weeks the plant I work at will be having the 1st of two back to back weekend "Family Days" at our plant. It has been several years since it has been held here. As a part of the events, they are going to have an open "Car Show". It will be a popularity vote for winner.
At first I thought I would not enter my GTI but then I listed all the features on my car and thought why should I not. Not many cars for sale now or in the past have all these performance features.
So, this will be my first car show.
I had not washed my car in 2 weeks so this weekend I washed it and focused on door jams, engine and under hood. Much work to go.
To help my chances I plan to make a story board so I can list all featrues on the GTI. Then I have to build some type of stand that I can mount under a front wheel to hold it in place. A fancy example of a stand is below, but sells for over $200.
Not many people in Tennessee will know much about an MK7.

The Family day occurs over two weekends because the plant will be running, so the off crews will come on that Saturday. In the past the Family day was held during July shutdown when plant was not running.

In order to win the person will have to have his car at both weekend events or one will never get enough votes.
It will be hard keeping it clean as it is my daily driver.

Below is some of my competition: Looks like an uphill battle so far!

99 Pontiac Trans AM
70 Chevelle SS 454
64 T Bird
05 Cobalt SS
1971 Plymouth Cuda
2011 Porsche Boxter
1996 Z28 Camaro
2005 Mustang GT
69 Mustang
75 Camaro
1994 Chevy Blazer
70 Mustang Fastback
2003 Mustang Cobra

I think I can take the Cobalt and Blazer.:D

Wish me luck.
If I win with a VW GTI in rural Tennessee it will be a miracle.

Yeah living in Rural GA we have little shows like that up here the vintage muscle is tough to beat. In my opinion the only late model competition on the list is the Porsche and the 2003 Cobra.

But maybe that's just because I'm a Terminator owner as well ;)

Best of luck to you, would be great to see the GTI win.

I think I will have a chance if I wrap my GTI in Orange, put a "01" on the doors and paste a Dixie flag on the roof.
That would get some votes in Tennessee! :D

Carbon Fiber VW Badge

Getting ready for my car show I noticed my front badge had some water marks on the black gloss background. I tried to remove but could not. They are small but I can see them so needed to correct. I did not want to try other chemicals for fear of making it worse.
So, I ordered Carbon Fiber VW emblem inserts for front and rear.

I like how they turned out. It is a little like playing the game "Operation" as you have to hold the pieces and center them in the opening. The static between the car and carbon fiber made it hard to hold them and slowly place them.

From 5ft away the back ground just looks black. Still looks OE.
I like the matte black background and in the sun it looks good.

Some pics.

1st Car Show!

Well the 1st weekend of Family day where I work is over and the second day is this Saturday. Below are pics form the 1st weeks car show. I hear more cars are signed up for the second week. Just have to keep it clean for another week. Pictures are of cars some of my co-workers own.
Some nice cars, but I think mine looked good.
I like how my story board display turned out. For what I had to use, looks ok.

I felt I needed to tell a little about my car as few in this area know much about a GTI. One car owner mentioned, "You do not see many GTI's around".

Sorry about glare. Early morning sun.
It was a long day. I had to give cart tours for 5 hours!:(

IMG_1460.JPG

Our Plant Manager owns a 2011 Red Porsche Boxter. That is why I mentioned it on my story board for braking distance.
Just worked out that he parked mext to me! :D

Another Take on Air Intake for a Turbo!

WARNING! This post is not about a VW.
So stop now if you only want MK7 info:
However - The info on air intake to Turbo Engine might be interesting to some who debate on best way to get air to intake.

Short story, wife's car died earlier than I wanted so we looked for a replacement.

I went thinking we would like the VW Tiquan which the dealer had 4 - 2015 on sale. However in the test drive both my wife and I were not happy with the vehicle. Felt slow and old and had a very upright feel.
We also tested a Honda CRV. Nice all around but my wife said it also did not ride as well as she thought it might. I agreed.

I had looked at 2014-2015 Hyundai's before and liked some of the SUV interiors. I knew a new 2016 Tucson was out but did not know much about it.
We ended up getting the Tucson. Did not get the Limited (did not have one) but the Leather seats would have been a $6-7,000 up to the Limited model so my wife said cloth would be ok.

The SUV has a 1.6L Turbo, and AWD. The wheels can even be locked in thru a button by center armrest. We do not get a lot of snow in Tennessee but we are prepared now.:D
The vehicle is likely better at off road than My 1997 RWD F150 Truck.

Extra info.
1.6L Turbo
175hp
195lb torque
7 speed dual clutch transmission.
It would be fun to drive if it had paddle shift but only stick and the throw
is longer than the GTI so not as much fun to shift in manual.
GTI transmission has it beat.
The Tucson does ride and drive smooth all but the shift from first to 2nd.
Not terrible but not as smooth as all the other shifts.
Can get 31mpg on interstate.

Below are some pictures of our car and the bottom pictures are from internet. Tough looking SUV. We now have two Turbo's. The GTI is still better!

The intake to the Turbo is similar to the GTI.
They do have two slotted openings on front of engine covering like others have cut on the GTI. The intake can also take air from the top of the radiator opening. It is not a direct shot but the air is skimmed off the top of the front grill opening. this area might be under more pressure but I bet not much as most of the air is passing thru and down under engine for cooling. I do like the air filter and can easily be opened and changed unlike the GTI that requires more special tools.
The down pipe looks to be cast unlike my GTI.
I know APR makes a cast down pipe.

I will add more when time but here it is for viewing.
The finish on the engine surround moldings looks like galvanized metal only brown.

First two SUV pics are mine, the other two are from internet.
3rd Picture is a LIMITED model with sunroof similar to the GTI. Sunroof is much larger in the Limited.
The engine cover is wimpy. Needs to be larger.

Hatch Pop! MK7 Review.

Last week I ordered "Hatch Pop" from USP MotorSports.
I had seen this on MK6 car but until now not availble for MK7.
My wife's new SUV has the motor open and close hatch and if I had a choice, this would be my mod for rear hatch.

But, that is not an option so I went the route of "Hatch Pop"

Below is my install and review at the end.

Pictures of the OE ball connects that are removed. Note the washer used by VW can not be removed and used on USP ball studs.

IMG_1473.JPG

IMG_1478.JPG

If you install the USP ball studs, then there is an unpainted ring around the stud as the car was painted with OE studs in place. Looks bad. :(

IMG_1481.JPG

IMG_1483.JPG

I purchased some Stainless Steel Washers (At Lowe's), that fit the stud perfectly. I went with stainless as this area can get wet and over time regular steel washers will likely rust on my white paint.

IMG_1486.JPG

Below are the studs after the "Sandman Modification". Good, slight unpainted area seen on hatch stud, but not bad. One could touch up paint if you have right color. At this time I did not.

IMG_1489.JPG

IMG_1492.JPG

Comparison of the shocks.
OE VW on the bottom. Made in USA per markings.
USP shock is made in Germany! :D
Happy news for all you across the pond.
Shock is well built. With only one OE shock installed it can not hold hatch up. For comparison of strength, the USP shock also can not hold hatch up if only one installed, but you can tell it is supporting more weight as it does not fall as fast. So the new shock is not he-man strong. Not being over-kill.

IMG_1493.JPG

The quality of USP parts is very good. Everything fits like it should. I suggest USP add some washers to use under studs. We MK7 owners are picky about looks. But send SS washers so people do not deal with rust in a year. Not an expensive item to add 4. A small bag is under $2 and you could buy in bulk. If you decide to not use SS then leave out as I would not like other to have rust in this area.

How does it work?

It does just what it should. The parts are quality, they fit and it works.
The shock end of the USP shocks is actually a small spring loaded mini shock. It is the Pop in "Hatch Pop". The close assist feature of OE hatch design is gone. With Hatch Pop, when you are closing the hatch you are reloading the shocks and spring pop. The effort is increased but not un-usable. I will not say it is effort free, but does take some thought and technique to close compared to OE.

If you do not want to touch outside of hatch to close then do not buy this. I found I can close and not touch paint however. I pull down on inside of door with left hand. Once half way down, I reach over with right hand and place palm on the VW logo. Using palm, I can push down with steady force and close hatch to latch. You must not let up at end or the hatch may latch but not be closed secure.

This sounds like a lot, and for many it will not be a mod of choice.
It is cool to be 100ft from car coming from Walmart and hit the hatch open and watch my White GTI pop the hatch and swing up while the parking lot lights shine on my GTI.

How to rate?
I feel the license plate LED mod is a 10. A must do for all and all will like!
I rate the "Hatch Pop" mod a 5-6. No a quality rating but a rating on should all do it. Many will not want to touch car. Many will not like the extra effort to close. This will take a special person who wants this mod.
If you are on the fence then stay off the Hatch Pop side as you might not like the extra handling. MK7 owners are unique and this made will appeal to a more select group. (maybe odd like myself).

My dogs now help me stay in shape with walking, the Hatch Pop will give me the upper body workout to go with it.

USP - sorry I could not tell everyone to go and buy, but I do not want other forum members to buy and not be happy with it.
USP did offer a good product that does what it should. No issues here.:D

Hope this review helps you decide if "Hatch Pop" is for you.

USP - if you get an electrical version I might have to upgrade. ;)
