Rust Protection

Hey guys,

I live in southern Ontario Canada, and have recently come into possession of a 2016 Golf R, and I wanted to look into rust protection.

Basically I want to run this thing until it breaks, and I want that to be a long way away. I've been looking at Krown, is it a good idea or should I look in other directions?

Thanks

How often do you guys see rust issues? I have never seen a "rust problem" on a modern German car. American cars, sure, can't spot a Chevy that isn't rusted on the road. Japanese cars, usually around door sills and moving mechanical parts that aren't drivetrain related. On German cars, the most I have seen is periodic rusting around the subframe where the paint has been chipped away over time. Far cry from being a problem though...

Any rust proofing will void VW's rust damage warranty. Do NOT have your vw rust proofed!

If you believe drilling holes in metal that is specially coated by the carmaker not to rust is OK then go for it. I wouldn't do it to my car. I lived in snow country where they used the worst salt for a long time and the only car I owned that actually rusted out was a 1970 model GM product, at the lower front fenders. I had a Mazda that was 10 years old and not one panel rusted. It was a 1991 and the only places that had rust were the fuel filler pipe, the exhaust system, and the rear suspension. The car companies do a lot better job now. Even my 8-year-old 2002 GTI never had any rust.

I used to apply Waxoyl to the underside of my cars in the 1980’s and early 1990’s. I’ve not bothered doing this on any car I’ve bought since 1993, and I’ve never had any corrosion issues. Admittedly we don’t get such harsh winters in the UK as you guys get in some parts of the US and Canada, but as you’ve said, car makers do a better job with corrosion protection these days.

I do rinse down the underside of my car during the winter months with a high pressure hose each time I wash it to remove salt deposits.
