The next Volkswagen Golf R could have up to 300bhp, Auto Express can reveal.

An insider told us the new flagship would definitely deliver 20bhp more than the previous 265bhp model, but that the total power output “could even start with a three” – putting the car right up against the new Audi S3.

Yet despite being the hottest Golf ever, the newcomer is likely to be slightly cheaper than before, with prices starting at around £30,000.

Once again, a 2.0-litre turbo engine will drive all four wheels. However, Volkswagen is trying to cut the weight of the 4WD system – the old Golf R was 150kg heavier than the GTI, but the difference is likely to be around 100kg this time round.

The new model could also feature a development of the Golf GTI’s optional electronically controlled mechanical front limited slip differential to provide torque vectoring and help reduce understeer. It will also get a specially developed electronic stability system which can be fully deactivated, unlike on the GTI.

Another new feature for the Golf R will be quad exhaust pipes for the first time; the previous car had two central mufflers. The new Golf R is expected to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September and go on sale in the UK early next year.

now we are talking sense, I recall when some articles were saying it'll be 600lbs lighter than its' predecessor <<<what's funny some people actually believed those articles!

The only one of these claims that sound unrealistic is the 300hp. I don't think VW is going to match the hp of the S3. A 20hp bump sounds reasonable.

Sounds much more believable than the last article mentioning the weight reduction

It seems that VW is raising the performance level of the GTI w/performance pkg, so the R should see some upgrades as well to maintain its advantage.

the performance package is just a 230hp compared to mk6 Golf R's 270hp....so even if mk7 R had 270hp (which is far less than reality) the MK7 R would STILL have an advantage over the GTI as you're talking about 40+hp for basically the same car ;)

at least thats my opinion :D :p

In the US, the R is rated at 256hp, 243lb-ft and 3225lbs. The MK7 GTI PP is supposed to be 227hp, 258lb-ft, and ~3000lbs. That's going to be pretty close in the real world if they don't provide a decent performance bump to the next R.

Most will end up modding the hell out of the cars, so factory hp/tq isn't a huge concern of mine anyways...

I'm definitely hoping for a DSG option this time around though...If not I may end up having to join an Audi forum :(

yup they should bump the R's performace for sure! but keep in mind that the mk7 R (just like the gti) will benefit from the MQB so the 3225lbs will no longer remain the same....which means in the real world they won't need a "decent bump" in order to maintain R's advantage! around 20hp (over the 270hp) is sufficient to keep it different... I don't think it will be that close as what you said

what VW should do is STOP selling the same damn car with different horse power for different regions.........IT'S REALLY ANNOYING!!!!

Well they did match power and torque between the MK6 R and the S3 8P, logic dictates they stick to that trend

Dyno tests have shown that the mk6 Golf R has the same HP in the US as the EU version, no matter what vw.com says. The detuning is a myth, they just made a corporate decision for whatever reason to under-report the performance for this market.

hmm I'm not sure if thats a myth! maybe thats the situation in US & UK but this is not how it goes here (Middle East)....I had a Golf R for like two weeks & i have to say it is no where better than a GTI except for AWD... I mean a stock 2013 GTI of my friend gave me a car length rolling from (40-220km) that was weird! I had ABT tune which "they claim" produces approx 300hp

in my opinion AWD doesn't worth the extra weight of the car unless you intent to moderately modify the car

It would seem that it has nothing to do with VW or any other car manufacturer that appears to be selling identical cars with different hp ratings between Europe and North America. Apparently, the way hp is calculated in Europe is slightly different than in N.A., resulting in different hp numbers being reported while actual power is the same. Detuning may actually be a myth in many cases.
