Hey guys,

Bought a new GLI a few months ago and just pulled the intake channel out to make the cutouts on the driver's side. Thought I'd let you know that they've made some interesting changes to the stock intake.

First off, the passenger side opening that some of you guys block off now has a hinged flap that opens and closes.

Secondly, there is an air scoop that runs the entire length of the intake that feeds air directly into the intake from the grill.

Lastly, air no longer has to go through the top of the grill to get to the intake where some slot cutouts are on the GTI.

**Note: These pictures were taken after I had already made cutouts on the drivers side. This section still comes blocked off like the GTI.

Interesting!

Is there anything that actuates the flap covering the passenger side of the intake? It looks like it flips forward and up towards the front of the car. If there is no actuator, then how would it flip open to allow for airflow?

Hey CBR,

There is no actuator. The flap is closed when the car is idling and opens up at some point when the vehicle is moving. My guess is to maybe help fuel economy when the vehicle is running stationary and then opens up to cool the engine bay when moving.

The wind on it's own could open up the flap, doesn't take much force at all.

I would assume it does, but I can not say for sure. It's not listed as a separate part anywhere. There is also no telling if this channel would fit a GTI. It appears as if it would though.

Mine is a 35th as well. Purchased the car in September 2019. What's your build date Butcher? I'll have to check mine when I get the chance.

Very cool and thanks for sharing. My Atlas has the flapper as well. It gives weight to the notion that the block-off plate is a good thing. Plus Jeff over at www.mymk7golf.com just did some testing on the block-off plate. I really believe this is to allow debris/snow through so it doesn't get blocked and the flapper allows it to sit shut when you are stropped/moving slowly so you don't get any warm engine compartment air to the intake. The ramp/duct thing is neat too and like the aftermarket ones folks get.
