Remove the Speed limiter

Looked everywhere, and from what I can tell, the only way to get rid of the speed limiter/governor is with an ECU tune. Is this correct?

I really like the appeal of the JB1, but I feel like that will be money wasted since I would still need a tune to eliminate said governor. Thanks for the input:)

Tune is the only way at the moment, going to have to wait until the MY2016 ECU codes are flashable.

I top out this car in 4th at the moment, pretty scary to know I have 2 more gears to go.

155 limiter I wouldn't care. 124 mph is depressing. Wish we could code that out without getting a flash tune. maybe someday?

Yeah, I agree. I've never owned a car that was capped out at 124... Depressing indeed.:(

Does VAGCOM not enable this to be recoded either?
UPDATE: It does not. But it does enable it to be lowered, albeit forever. There was a funny story of a guy who set his top speed to 62 mph permanently. That sucks.

At the same time I have to report to you...

By your logic, why don't all cars in America just come limited to 75 mph?

Because several states are now set at 80 and a road in texas at 85 :D
Yeah I agree, just knowing you are set so low sucks. I don't plan to even try to hit 124mph... but knowing I couldn't go higher even if i wanted is sad.

How does VCDS lower speed limit indefinitely? I think you could trick the car by changing tire size in VCDS, but your speedo would be off. This is just a guess, i havent tried it.

Wow I didn't know that about Texas. Sounds fun. Even without a tune this car pulls so hard and on a private road (5 miles, 3 lanes) that I have the privilege of using, I can peg that speed limiter for quite a while in 4th gear.

Well according to what I read, there is somewhere that the permanent max speed can be altered, but only down, and never back up. So one guy tested it by changing it to 100 KPH(~62mph), and subsequently could never raise it again. Ross tech actually told him "sucks to be you" and that he would probably need to get a new ECU.

I wish I had a private road :O

And as for that guy, he now literally needs a tune :p

is this still the case now in 2024?

Internet full of info that VCDS can indeed remove the speed limiter. (Engine, Security code, adaptations -> individually adjusted top speed limiter). There’s even various YouTube videos on this but not with GTi

On my 2016 GTI, I don’t see this menu listed :-( I don’t even see static limit

Most Internet threads before 2017 say it’s only possible through ECU, not on VCDS

SO what’s the truth?

You need a tune.

Thanks, but doesn't specifically answer the question. Is VCDS not something you are familiar with perhaps?

I know I can do it througth a tune, but do you mean it is 100% not possible through VCDS?
I see so many Youtube videos with users doing this through VCDS (although not on GTi but a lower variant Golf mk7). Begs the question why not on GTi.

Even more curious that the option is not listed on my VCDS Engine Adaptations menu (after using security code 27971)
