Red stripe light on driver door sill stopped working

Hi guys,

I picked up a 2016 GTI autobahn just under two months ago, I recently noticed the LED stripe light is no longer working on the driver's door sill. All of the ambient lights in the car work including the two on the passenger side and the one on the door itself on the drivers side. I tried turning them on and off in the infotainment unit but that has not turned it back on.

Any ideas of what it may be and how to further diagnose the problem? I know if the door light goes out, the whole trim has to be replaced, hoping its a cheaper and easier fix with the bottom sill light.

Thanks for the help!

It shouldn't have, but it may have come unplugged. You have to remove the trim panel to access the plug to check.

Yeah, those LED's should basically last the life of the car unless defective. I'd also start with your fuse.

Thanks for reminding me that I need to check the flicking LED bulb in my powder room.. LED's are cheap these days but some have a very short life.

Seems to me the same fuse would be for both doors and he side the other doors LEDs are working. Sounds more like a connector.

These things fail all the time. Have seen some people replace the led strip but it's probably easier to replace the whole part.

Had the same issue, the connector was giving 12v but the led board had water inside somehow and was fried. It only had 2 leds but they are angled at 90 degrees so they light up the whole red bar thing, couldn't find anything like them online. That oem part is like $100. I had a 12v strip light. I cut the plug out of the original light, solder it to the led strip plugged everything in and so far it's working. It was pain in the @$# to mount it flush like oem but it lights up much stronger than before and was free for me. Hopefully pictures will clarify my crappy explanation

Hey now.
I just noticed mine is doing the same exact thing. All other lights work including passenger side sill.
Guess I’ll add another mini project for an upcoming weekend.

Hello - 2017 Mk7 owner checking in. Same issue on one door. A few quick questions before I dig into this.

- to remove the strip, do you remove just the silver strip or does the whole plastic sill come off?
- any details on the best way to remove the part appreciated. Does the plastic sill part just pull up and unclip?

@Beelz - for your fix, it looks like you just soldered in a new 12v strip that connects straight to factory harness? You use a commercial 12v LED light strip to replace the factory strip?
