Objective: Get a working rear fog light on my 2015 Golf Sportwagen S WITHOUT needing to purchase a rear fog switch
Note: From the factory, European VW Golfs come with only a SINGLE rear fog light. There is not a pin to do a rear fog on both sides. I decided to go for a single rear fog since that is OEM. And also because in the USA, fewer people will think I have by brake lights on
Overview:
1. Remove Rear Light unit on the driver's side hatch.
2. Cut out dummy bulb. I used a soldering iron to prevent shavings from going everywhere. Be sure to cut out enough. I was a bit conservative and the bulb ended up melting some plastic when I first had it on for 30 mins.
3. Reinstall tail light. Install white bulb 7440. I had two leftover from when I modded my car to have amber turn signals. So $0 cost
4. I used 18 gauge wire and this pin. I already had both of these. $0.
5. Run the wire from PIN 5 in the plug that goes into the tail light. It needs to be fed through the left side of the rubber wiring loom in the hatch. Be careful. I broke the clip on my wiring loom. Do not pull on the wiring loom because you will break the clip. You need a little pick to press in the tab on the left side where it connects to the hatch lid. You do not need to remove the lower portion. Also, if I were you, try to fish it through the loom if you can. Even if it's hard, it'll be easier than replacing your loom which turns out is super complicated. Here's a tutorial on how to fix it and easier way if you do break it.
6. Run the wire down the left side of the car. I pulled out all the plastics. Again, you could try to fish what you can. It's all clips and you may be more or less skilled than me at pulling panels.
7. You will need to remove the panel by your hood release to pull out your BCM. Disconnect your battery before removing your BCM.
8. To remove the BCM you have to reach your hand up in the gap between the BCM. Remove the 3 wiring harness connectors by pulling down on the levers. I did not remove mine this way. I just pulled as hard as I could like in this video which is wrong. It was a PITA to get out. I assume removing the wires first makes it easier. When I reinstalled it at the end, it was much easier to slide in the BCM and then plug in the wires.
9. Connect your wire to Socket A PIN 72.
10. Code and then reassemble. You can also pay $50-$100 for the correct light switch if you prefer to do that. Coding will be more simple than what I am showing
Rear Fog Switches FYI
5GM 941 431 B WZU (Auto, Parking, low beam, front fogs)
5G0 941 431 BD WZU (Auto, Parking, low beam, front fogs, rear fog)
5GM 941 431 C WZU (Parking, low beam, front fogs)
5G0 941 431 BF WZU (Parking, low beam, front fogs, rear fog)
5G0941 431 BG WZU (Parking, low beam, rear fog)
5G0 941 431 BJ WZU (Auto, Parking, low beam)
5G0 941 431 BE WZU (Auto, Parking, low beam, rear fog)
On my 2015 Sportwagen S, the "correct" switch I ultimately would need is: 5G0941431BGWZU
Coding
For now, I skipped buying a switch. I'll eventually buy one when I find one cheaper. But for now, I reprogrammed my "parking light" switch to instead turn on front headlights AND rear fog light. So if I want to use rear fog, I just put it in the parking light position.
The channel with the rear fog is Leuchte26NSL LA72
1. In OBD Eleven, I changed the programming setting from Service to Development mode
2. First I changed Lichtfunktion A26 to Standlicht vorn (only when switch is set to parking lights). Access Code 31347
3. I turned Dimmwert AB26 to 100
4. Lasttype 26 - 9 allgemeine Gluhlampe 27W auch H15
Now your rear fog comes on with parking lights. To get your low beams to come on too do the following
1. Left Side: Leuchte6ABL LC5 Lichtfunktion B6 > Standlicht vorn
2. Right Side: Leuchte7ABL RB1 Lichtfunktion B6 > Standlicht vorn
