My road bike is like 16 lbs. Prob closer to 15 with the front wheel off. I've seen the sucker mount in action on other cars. The amount of deflection was pretty gnarly from what I witnessed. Would be the largest deterrent.
Like I said, if you used the sunroof and rear window, no risk. I need to test putting my rear wheel holder closer to the back edge or even on the wing, it does deflect a good bit when in the middle of the roof panel with my mountain bike. Like you, my road bike is sub UCI weight limit and barely has an impact when mounted.

Depending on how much you're transporting it, those trunk mount saris racks I used to have good luck with. I personally placed felt tape on the feet and angled the bottom so I could still open the trunk. They were my favorite in sedan owning days. Hitch rack on the suv I've slammed my shins, hip, and shoulder many times. Roof rack is basically pointless now and support for them seems to have almost disappeared in favor of hitch racks. I think that's mostly because of the industry dropping quick releases and people being too short and weak to lift bikes overhead on taller vehicles (which they're all tall now).

I'm in the middle of carrier shopping myself... Sadly looks like a low hitch rack is the only option that fits my wife's and my bike, but I'm not excited about the reduced ground clearance and something hanging an extra 5ft off the back 😑

I don't plan to transport the bike a ton. Just to group rides on the other side of town and other events that require me to drive. Most of my riding is done in my immediate area. I'm blessed to have a very nice community to ride in.

Throw the road bike inside. So much easier. Only time that doesn’t work is if you have to leave it in the car for a while. Then it’s just an invitation to receive a broken window.

Then for the sake of simplicity and cost, I'd personally take a look at the saris bones trunk rack. Saris rep years ago told me to rotate the bottom feet to face the trunk and use the bumper as a ledge and not a base. Worked for me for years and I could access the trunk.

Downside is it needs a full top tube, so some women's bikes won't mount without an adapter.

It’s a lot more contact with the car and the straps always seem to whip the car, especially on longer drives and the pedal always seems close to the car.

Hitch racks are my favorite, a SeaSucker is second and a traditional roof rack is third (unless you have a factory rack.)

I haven't had those issues personally. I'm sure it depends a lot on the car shape, and how it's setup, bike size, etc. With those kinds of racks, or even hitch mount hang style ones it's hard to get away from some tire sway from the front. That's usually where I've found mtb to be most annoying.

Side note, what are you guys riding?? 😁

I just started getting back into some light road biking after being hit a couple times by trucks years ago. Buying a bike early last year was a nightmare of overpriced, overspecced stuff and horrendously underspecced fodder. I ended up buying a sirrus and replacing almost everything except for frame and wheels because that was cheaper than buying a frameset, 😂.

Buy a bike now, everything is on sale. I too bought a bike at the beginning of the pandemic. I’ve got too many bikes and I’ve sold a few recently

Current is a 21 Specialized Stumpy EVO, a 21 Canyon Endurace and two custom DeSalvos, a ti roady and a steel 29er single speed.

I just retired a TREK Domane SL5 and bought a Cervelo Soloist Di2 with Reserve carbon wheels. Upgraded the handlebars to the ENVE SES aero. IMO, it’s the best all road bike money can buy right now aside from an SL7 S-Works, just costs a lot less. Canyon is also hard to beat for the money, but there are a lot of great bikes out there right now. You don’t have to spend several thousand to enjoy a great riding experience.

I bought my Canyon from a buddy that upgraded to a new Domane. My riding partner has an Aethos.
