This is very positive information I got via a SE forum. Hopefully it’s possible to have the exhaust system in permanent “race mode”, have to be investigated when the car arrives :D.

Perhaps with a small modification which will leave the butterfly valves in open mode regardless the “race” setting. Can't be to complicated.....

"As for the exhaust, it's more than a visual difference. While gases escape only through the inner two of the four exits under light-load driving, high-throttle or high-rev conditions open butterfly valves at the exit of a rear resonator chamber open, to open the outer exits and give the exhaust a note that's raspier when revved. Engaging Race mode opens those butterfly valves for the outside two outlets all the time, resulting in a noticeably more bellowy sound just off idle and up to the mid revs, where it seems that the piped-in intake sounds chime in just as much if not more."

Nice feature, isn't it?

Anyone who have got your R delivery yet?

Is there anyone who could confirm or deny what I have written in the first posting in this tread?

Is there a difference between the driving modes regarding the rear muffler – are there any butterfly valves ? Or is it just fictional exhaust noise via the radio loudspeakers or a separate soundaktor?

Grateful for some information :).

(Expecting the delivery of my R in 10 days or so.)

Yes, if you put it in race mode you can hear the difference in the exhaust at idle. It becomes a bit louder and deeper. In the other modes (normal/comfort/eco etc) it sounds the same.

You mean also at the outside then? (Not just soundaktor).

Yes, on the outside it sounds different too.

If you look under the car at the exhaust it looks like it has the same type of system that opens exhaust flaps like I have on my S3. I didn't get a good enough to look to see if it controls both, or just one of the two pipes per side.

Thank you for the clarification.

I had a look at the car a couple of days ago, (at the dealers backyard), started it and pressed the different driving profile modes. I could hear difference between eco (silent) and the other modes (more sound) but I suppose afterwards it was the “fake sound” inside the car. I also went out of the car down to the muffler but it was hard to tell the difference. Just had it “idling”, didn’t drive it at all.

When I get the car I have to go under it for a physical control.

Follow up regarding Golf R rear muffler.

In “Comfort”, “Normal” and “Race” mode the butterfly valves for the two outer exhaust pipes are open. Good basy sound!

In “Eco” mode the outer pipes are closed.

Turned of - open. Default mode is open.

Can someone confirm whether the different modes mentioned are 'standard' or are they part of the DCC option?

They are not part of DCC as that is regarding the damping of the vehicle. DCC adjusts your dampers if you order that...

Driver Profile Selection (DPS) is standard on UK cars and will provide these modes. It is an extra in other countries like Belgium...If you have DPS and DCC then you'll also get the comfort mode....

As standard you'll only have normal, race, eco & individual (where you can mix and match the settings)

This is how it looks when you have DCC. The “Comfort” mode is added.

Comfort
The suspension/shock absorbers are in soft mode and everything else is in “Normal” mode I presume.
