"Proper" 60-130mph technique

So I've been testing out my EQT Vortex tune, doing 1/4 mile pulls. Decided to also go out to 130mph to see my time.

But from reading around and comparing to others, it seems most people do their 60-130mph times by starting their pull around 40-45mph in 3rd gear than doing WOT. So my time was a good bit slower in comparison since I wasn't starting it at the "right" point/gear.

This also seems common practice for a lot of other car guys, not just VW/Audi scene.

Why is that? I mean I get how starting at that point in 3rd gear and than going WOT will get you to 130mph with only 1 shift (helping for a faster time)...but it also seems a little sneaky in terms of comparing to others.

If you're measuring how quickly your car can get from 60-130, the fastest way is to start with traction/boost. Why compare with a random handicap?

Thanks. I guess I was approaching from the mindset of a 1/4 mile run and just taking it to 130 for the 60-130 time. But now realize for 60-100 and 60-130 times, that is the wrong way to approach it.

Yeah, the longer you are at WOT the more heat is generated so the less time you are in throttle the better.

What was your time?
1/4 mile was 11.5 (119mph trap) and the 60-130 on the same pull was 10.7
DA was 1900

It was on 93 octane, Vortex Standard Golf R. But I also only have modest timing on the tune as it is meant for my winter/road trip tune. E85 is next up.

10.7 isn't bad at all for pump on a full weight R.
Oh, yay! I've seen a lot of low 9's and high 8's posted by others with similar setups and thought I was pretty far off. Though half of them were GTIs. Which, while also being lighter, I was told the gearing is also better suited for hitting 130mph while still in 4th.

I tried a rolling 60-130 today (stupid dragy didn't capture it) but had to shift into fifth to make 130 (4th gear would only get me to 122 even with shifting around 7200rpm)

Yep, lighter and 2 gears for us.
Just to ask, cause why not: is there a scenario where it is possible to do 60-130 in the R in two gears or will it always take three? This is for the MK7.5 (so 7spd). Not sure if the 6spd R is/was different.
